VW Bluemotion across America - East to West

Not the sort of scenery you usually get when driving your 59-plate Golf TDI... Chris Chilton's Bluemotion Golf was shipped from the UK especially for CAR Magazine's feature in the new March 2011 issue - where we crossed America to hunt down an audience with outgoing California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

now could someone please edit the captions?

I take it 'flouro' is for 'fluorescent'?

And a sunset cannot be 'epic' unless you're a spotty-faced yoof

That Los Angeles smog is the reason bluetec exists. California emissions rules for cars are the toughest in the world. Even after America's tardy switch to low-sulfur diesel, the German diesel brands were still jammed-up on NOx levels way too high for California authorities. Merc, BMW, VW/Audi are the sole sellers of diesel cars in America. Gasoline, CNG, and propane all do the job for less money.

The American West is a global destination and these are the best photos you could get? Next time study before you go. It will pay off.

I like the front down styling though its appears to be more of an illusion than anything else, with the bodywork hugging the edge of the tyre and the curve of the bumper all working hard to crate a wheel in the corner look, when in fact theres probably a good few feet from the hub centre to the furthest edge of the front bumper.

Must have been an eye opener for the Chiltonian. Driving across America (I have done it twice) is always a seriously impressive and daunting journey. It can get scarey for silly reasons - but thats the States with its mix of nationalities which make up modern Americans. You are never quite sure which way the wind blows. But doing it once in your life really is worth it.

Comment about the blue motion - why does it always look as if the front suspension is struggling to hold up an enormous diesel engine? Surely it cant be THAT nose heavy!
