The Book?

I subscribed to the magazine, and was assured that Mr Bayley's book would be fothcoming, even though I was in Australia. I have yet to receive it and I was just wondering whether I am unique in being an overseas subscriber who has yet to have it arive, or whether they just haven't made it down here yet. Another possibility is that perhaps Stephen has been writing sleeve notes especially for me, considering my close ties with CAR and relentless dedication to the forum (ahem).

Has anybody else received their copy yet?

Adopted, borrowed & stolen designs

In a thread earlier, it was briefly discussed with me & a few others cars that owed their existence to designs intended for others. I believe for example (although is unconfirmed) that the design for the Daewoo Matiz was rejected by Fiat as a Panda, and that the original Honda Aerodeck was first penned as a replacement for the Scimitar GTE.

Others gave further illustrations, EG a Daewoo concept that Maserati took the design from for the 3200 GT (!!!) & that the Pug 309 was once intended to be a Talbot (Lokinen? Sorry - I can't find the thread in question!)

There must be other cars that ...

False idols

Here is a new thread which I hope will allow people such as myself to vent their feelings about cars which are lauded by many, yet leave us a little cold, or worse completely umoved.

My greatest such car is the Porsche 356. Now I know it was a good sportscar in class and began the Porsche empire but it was a dumpy little sod. All bubous bodywork and dinky track width. The later versions with their more upright headlights looked even worse. And it wasn't even that fast then, let alone now. An over-rated little pudding in my opinion.

Licencing

The current licencing requirements in my country (Australia) and I suspect many others, are grossly inadequate. I know it is a tired argument, but driving a car is not something that should be undertaken lightly, nor should it be something that is achieved without proper training and  subsequent testing.

Was I submitted to such rigours when I gained my licence? Am I retested to ensure my adequacy for the potentially lethal task that I perform? Tha answer to both is no. While I am slapped with fines and demerit points for speeding, the idiot in front of me with the underinflated tyre, ...
