A very green Fiesta - NOT!

Just like the Ford Fiesta Jeremy Clarkson got to play in last week I also own one of the new Green Fiestas. A 1.4 CDTi Zetec model in which I have now covered just short of 5000 miles.

I am currently heading rapidly towards a court case to challenge the published mpg fuel consumption figures for the car. I am ultimately looking to return my lovely green car.

The ford published figures for this Fiesta are Combined 67.2 mpg; Urban 53.3 mpg; Extra urban 80.7 mpg

My driving is approximately 90% on motorway and generally queues and delays are ...

Cars are greener than buses

[1/4] I was going to add this to the JohnnyBimmer fizzy drinks thread, but that's getting unwieldy and this is on a slightly different topic.

I've got a thing about buses. Can't stand them. Hate them. Haven't used one in 10 years. I had enough of being absent-mindedly punched in the face by the person sitting next to me opening their newspaper. Stood at bus stops in freezing rain for too long, too many times.

But I do accept that a bus is an efficient way of transporting people around a busy city. You can squeeze a hundred odd people ...

What's the environmental impact of a car?

I have started this thread as a means of taking (part at least of) the "green" debate away from the "responses to new cars" sections of the website.

As a starting point, I'd like to posit the idea that both the creation AND use of a car does indeed create harm to the environment. Now as a car enthusiast, I would like to point out that the heating of homes, industry, flights/aviation and - frankly - the production of children all represent rather more of an envisonmental concern, but putting that one to one side (and it's a daddy of an argument!), ...

Interesting documentary

Anyone seen 2007's "The Great Global Warming Swindle"? Saw it a couple of weeks ago and i must say i was very intrigued by the claims in that documentary.

I always beleived that man has done gone a long way in destroying this enviroment with all our emmisions and polution and such but after watching this i have to admit that what the documentary makers claim seems perfectly reasonable.

Dont consider me 'converted' to the JohnyBimmer school of thought just yet though. I have just decided i am officialy undecided.  I'm not going to ...

driving the Smart breed

I think goverments and councils want us to drive around in the cities in BIG 4x4 comfort.

Why, well I've now owned my Smart for nearly a year; it's a great tool for city life BUT I have witnessed that city councils hate these mirco cars/eco cars.

Try scaling any traffic calming hump or speed restrictor hump above 2mph and all hell breaks loose, basically the chassis is too short and narrow and cannot take the punishment. I believe in mechanical sympathy but this kind of abuse cannot go unrewarded and soon or later something will break (including my back or neck from the ...

Electric City Cars

Am not usually an eco person but a particular issue has come to my attention.

You may or may not be aware that the government and many local councils have took the initiative to install charging points for electric cars in order to encourage more people to drive such cars.  Several have already been built in London and other conurbations throughout the country and many more are planned for arrival next year.

The principal is simple, a member of the public pays £75 and is rewarded with ownership of a key and a cable for a year, they then acquire/purchase ...

Tax My Fizzy Drink Why Don't You!

'Green government' taxes CO2 from car exhausts and jets in international airspace outside of its tax jurisdiction... when will they get round to the obvious... the bubbles in our fizzy drinks?

An enviromental issue that's "the biggest threat to us today" according to Tony Blair as Iraq/WMD was just before it! So another dodgy dossier signed off by 'experts' (Govt funded cronies, sorry 'scientists') is all the justification politicians need to fleece people.

The only proven factor to move Earths temperature over our 4.5 billion years is the fusion reactor in the sky we affectionately call the Sun. Ice however, ...
