Innovator, Inspiration - Carroll Shelby 1923-2012

This is in the memory of the man who could have been called, not inaccurately, one of the last living legends of the Automotive world. Not for him were the respectable benignness of Sir Stirling Moss or Enzo Ferrari's brash, flamboyant nature. Carroll Shelby was ostensibly American and as nonchalant and laid back as could be typified from his nationality. He took to life with the spryness of a man much younger and fitter.

I only ever saw him once in real life - at the SEMA show in Vegas 2007, no less. SEMA is never the most relaxing place to spend time but when I saw ...

Anatole "Tony" Lapine RIP

 Gentlemen,

German car websites are have just publicised obituaries for Porsche's former head of design, Tony Lapine.

Lapine must rank among the most influental stylists at Zuffenhausen, for it was under his watchful eye that Porsche finally broke away from the traditional rear engine design, as originally created by Erwin Komenda. The front engined 924/944 and the 928 must rank among the most intriguing cases of a brand extending and modernising its model range - and it was Lapine who supervised these superior works of designers such as Wolfgang Möbius and Harm Lagaay. Yet it was also during this period ...

Corrosion on

Would welcome comments on the cause of the corrosion pitting on the attached picture. This is occurring in similar positions within all wheels on my car. The wheels were fitted in March last year as replacements for the original set on the car when bought new 7 months earlier.
The wheels have no kerb damage or scratches whatsoever and not been exposed to much winter road driving. The car is cleaned regularly using simple basic turtlewax as the car had a supagard system applied.
Someone suggested that there could be an electrical fault causing this but who ...

Klassic Kar Kwotes

The other day I had my first ride in a second generation Prius. As a passenger my impressions were of a well behaved drivertrain, with a smooth transition to and from silence at traffic lights, lots of legroom, surprisingly reasonable headroom in the rear, and an unexpectedly choppy ride. If I wasn’t, at heart, a hooligan, it’s a car I’d be reasonably happy to own.

But the main item that struck me was the large central display. This might be customisable but, on this one, it seemed to be dedicated to displaying consumption figures in a variety of different ways. ...

Silk Purses and Sows Ears

SILK PURSES IN DEMAND? THEN SCRAPE THE BARREL FOR SOWS EARS

There is an old saying that you can´t make a silk purse from a sow´s ear. Something more expensive than its ingredients is often accused of being mutton dressed as lamb. In this little essay I look at some uncertain lamb and some suspicious silk purses of the car industry´s recent decades.

If you want to have a competitive car, it helps if the underpinnings are designed to combat the future products of your rivals. And if you want to charge a high price for your ...

New Citroen C4 vs. Seat Ibiza

These two cars:

Citroen C4 2.0 HDi Exclusive 5dr

and

Seat Ibiza 2.0 TDi CR FR 5d

Question: Which would feel the fastest and most torquey?

I currently drive a 59 plate Mitsubishi Lancer 2.0 Di-D Sportback and am sick to the back teeth of how sluggish it feels compared to my previous 54 plate Seat Leon 1.9 TDi 130! I just can't decide between these two new cars. They are very similar on paper!

DISMANTLING A CAR - RULES & REGULATIONS

Dismantling of an ELV ( End Of Life Vehicle ) is normally done in an ATF ( Authorised Treatment Facility ) which needs permission from EPA ( Environment Protection Agency ), licences, etc.
If a private individual wants to dismantle onetime only 2 or 3 Cat C / D salvage vehicles ( NOT ELV's ) in an automobile workshop, does he still have to go thru' the necessary red tape, or can he do so without ? Automobile workshops DO handle and dispose of waste car fluids appropriately during servicing.
If bureaucracy is to be followed, does it ...
