Licencing

The current licencing requirements in my country (Australia) and I suspect many others, are grossly inadequate. I know it is a tired argument, but driving a car is not something that should be undertaken lightly, nor should it be something that is achieved without proper training and  subsequent testing.

Was I submitted to such rigours when I gained my licence? Am I retested to ensure my adequacy for the potentially lethal task that I perform? Tha answer to both is no. While I am slapped with fines and demerit points for speeding, the idiot in front of me with the underinflated tyre, ...

What were they thinking?

Its all in the title (only American motors please!)

The first one on my list would have to be the 1980 Dodge Charger...Just look at it! Came with 2.2l normally aspirated engine (96bhp) and was based on the 1978 Dodge Omni 024 wich itself was based on the Talbot Horizon....(p.s: I could not find any better pictures on google)

Citation IV+EV-1

Interesting thing I noticed earlier, the 1984 Chevrolet Citation IV concept... looks very much like the 1998 GM EV-1!!!!

Makes you wonder if the Americans had stayed on the ball and carried on down that path (slip-strimmed design+electric motor) They probably would not be in the mess they are right now

Forgotten cars of the last 35 years

I will start the thread with these two cars

The Austin Ambassador

Released in 1982 to replace the unloved Princess, the Ambassador did not fair much better. The only engine available was a 2litre with an output of only 96bhp,the car only weighted 1250kg but a 0-60mph run still took a palsy 13s! Rubbish built quality was expected from the start, breakdowns were common. 45000 were made in 2 years. It was not (never?) released as a right hand drive model. Do you remember this car?

The Lancia Gamma

Released in 1976,this was the luxury car which was given the task to take Lancia ...

A very green Fiesta - NOT!

Just like the Ford Fiesta Jeremy Clarkson got to play in last week I also own one of the new Green Fiestas. A 1.4 CDTi Zetec model in which I have now covered just short of 5000 miles.

I am currently heading rapidly towards a court case to challenge the published mpg fuel consumption figures for the car. I am ultimately looking to return my lovely green car.

The ford published figures for this Fiesta are Combined 67.2 mpg; Urban 53.3 mpg; Extra urban 80.7 mpg

My driving is approximately 90% on motorway and generally queues and delays are ...
