Re: coupes

They are all ok if a little uninspiring, the Toyota or Hyundai being the safest bets. Personally I might very well hunt down the best Peugeot 406 coupe I could find. You could even get a fully loaded leathered up 2.2 diesel for the money, though it might have a few miles on it.

Re: coupes

If you´re prepared to consider the Astra coupe then you should consider the Focus 3-door. Yes, it´s not a coupe but it does a lot of things the Astra can do only better.

The 406 is a good suggestion. Some versions of it are downright superb. If you can tolerate an older car, try the Coupé Fiat. It´s a pocket rocket. More sober but more durable is the Honda Prelude. I believe some of them came with passive rear steering.

Of the three cars you picked, the Toyota is the best. I don´t care for the styling but it did pretty well in contemporary road tests.

Re: coupes

Another option is the Renault Megane coupe 1995-2002. It has styling that is both excellent and French. They paid unusual attention to the small stuff on this car and as far as I can tell it is constructed more tightly than later Meganes. The ride is probably nicer too. A good one should cost buttons at this stage.

Re: coupes

I think that the Toyota would be the best bet. The Hyundai was built to a lesser quality at that time, which was reflected in its lower price. The Astra is the most handsome but GM Europe cars in this era were mechanically fragile and costly to repair.

Oh dear - Lokinen is pointing you in the French direction - DONT LISTEN !!! Looks good but is a very doubtful contender for any reliability medals. Of those you mention, not very inspiring are they? However, what you have failed to inform us are the following issues (a) are you single or with family - single can ofc incl ladyfriend b) do you have a budget issue c) where do you live d) how many miles/km per year do you expect to cover e) how long do you intend to keep this vehicle? Each of those answers makes it a curved ball and until at least I know the answers I will refrain from making a comment. So help us to help you Mr AZ274.. ok. For instance if you look for a solid banger which will be faithful and also look good - then the old Audi Coupe CC ( 5cyl) is one of the best around ( plus it will be a classic one day in my opinion)..

Oh and another golden oldie is the Opel Calibra ( dont go the Turbo model though - those things were low quality and very expensive to replace)
