The Impala looks rather good. At first glance I am impressed.

Really? I think that it is ill proportioned- too heavy in the rear quarters, almost as if the designers were so caught up in making it "dynamic" that they forgot about elegance. What they should do is look over to the Caddy guys for inspiration.

The Impala - Hmmmn . Dull . At best . The ' Cruze ' albeit not a good design is in fact better in the metal than the impala . When you see an Impala in person IMHO it makes you think " This is what Toyota would design if the objective was to make the Camry even more boring "

Cadillac - When you've been subjected to seeing them day after day their design language wears thin rapidly . Sit inside one and you'll be horrified . More blind spots ( in every model ) than a Corvette . Cheap materials and substandard construction in comparison to their rivals . Dreck really .

So can GM ever be ' Cool ' IMHO ? Suffice it to say I've a better chance of becoming richer and more famous than ol ' Slow Hand ' ( Eric Clapton )

Re: Can GM ever learn to be cool?

I had another look at the Impala. Indeed, there is a lot more car aft of the b-pillar than there is forward. But the design is a kind of fastback and I am prepared to grant the car a bit more soak time before I change my mind. Is it based on something Saab? It´s huge and vaguely suggestive of the Saab 9-5 architecture. Is it cool though?  No, not really. It seems to want to be a Jaguar. The last proper Impala, the one based on the Caprice was cool because it didn´t care about anyone´s opinions.

Just the opposite B&N . Something SAAB was based on the GM platform now used by the Impala *

But fastback  ??? Well not unless y'all are getting something other than what we're getting here  being called an Impala . Either that or the photo's are giving you the wrong impression . All our Impala's are dull , lifeless and bland sedans . BTW they're not that big either . Camry sized for comparison .

As to the Caprice based Impala of old . Yeah now back then Chevy/GM could be  cool on occasion   Actually though  its beginning to feel like ancient history since Chevy/GM was cool . Now they're almost all poorly executed  ToyotaEuro Wanna be's .... by GM's own admission

* All SAAB's during GM's reign were based on badge engineered Chevy platforms

@gtrslngr- We are talking about the soon to be released Impala, not the one that you see all over the place (especially with the little Hertz stickers in the back window) look at car4mh's picture on the previous page. I understand your Caddy horror- the interiors are quite nasty but overall I like them a lot. The little ones with the sharp edges are unique and rather delicious to me at least.

@B&N- The new Impala is based on the Insignia I think, as was the Saab 9-5.

Also the new Astra coupe is a very tidy looking thing, but not really cool. Here are my 3 cool GM cars at present.

@ Batty - Impala - I know . Its here in KC  already  . Its no larger than a Camry . Its a fastback sedan wanna be ( e.g . in the metal , not really ) Its dull as a butter knife trying to cut thru a well done steak . And from all initial reports ...... its boooooooring to drive as well . Car4mh's post is some 80 days out of date ya know !

I did make one error though when saying all SAAB's under GM's ownership were built on Chevy platforms : forgetting the abysmal SAABaru 9-2 . I'm shocked/disappointed no one called me on that phoo paa

I'll stand by my statement  living with GM products on a daily basis , seeing one or another at almost every turn in the metal rather than in photos  ;

The ONLY car GM currently  makes that even approaches ' Cool ' is the C6 Corvette . The Camaro loses any cool factor by the fact that its equal Mustang models with a solid rear axel and half the tecnology can smoke it on the road courses as well as the drags . Cadillacs here are for old men having a Mid Life Crisis yet still needing to seat four but  lacking the funds/class/discernment  to move up to a Benz / Bimmer etc . The Caddy hot rod wagon ....... is a disaster . I'll try and track down the 4 part article/diary  written by a recent owner / auto journalist . It aint pretty  . Day after he bought it it started falling apart .

No my Antipode/UK/EU site mates . When it comes to GM in the US ; Buy  FORD /Japanese/Euro .

And for the love of all things good and proper . DO NOT buy a Chrysler !

Re: Can GM ever learn to be cool?

gtrslngr - you either have advance access to GM products... or are you writing to us from the future? Chevrolet says the new Impala is a 2014 model, and not due for release until next spring in the US. www.chevrolet.com/culture/article/2014-impala-sports-sedan/ Are you thinking of the 2013 Malibu?

Anyway, thinking of Batty's cool GM list, I'd add the Holden Ute (it's not as practical as the Falcon ute but it's a good-looking thing), the Corvette (I suspect I'd be satisfied performance-wise with a standard one fitted with the magnetic ride control dampers, but I love the engineering that went into the Z06 and the ZR1) and I'd put back the new Astra GTC (even if it's probably harder to see out of than it should be) since it might not be cool in absolute terms but I think it's very cool for a Vauxhall.

Re: Can GM ever learn to be cool?

car4mh - Kansas City auto show  - GM plant just up the road . Several ' manufacture ' plates 2013-2014 whatever Impala's running lose around town ( I've counted four so far ) undisguised I might add . We get a lot of that around here , God knows why

Never doubt the gtrslngr . He may be an ____ from time to time .. but he knows his stuff mate !

( you of all people ought to know that ... )

BUT !!!!! May  have to eat my words there yet on the GM Cool thing  gents . Seems I missed the GM announcement last week that they're a bringin back the good ol' Caprice ( well a new one actually ) RWD and based on one o' them Aussie Holden thingies . Any ideas whcih one ? And ........ the rumor attached to the announcement is ......... they're finally bringin over  one o' those Ute thingies they should a gived us years ago .

Also FORD is now rumored to be bringing out a new RWD Town Car as well . Other than the Ute rumor I'm taking these announcement/rumors quite seriously . Seems our Police Departments want RWD 4drs  , They hate the Charger , and are fighting tooth and nail to keep their current rides on the road ,, so the markets wide open to the first one on the ground

It is based on the Holden Caprice. Holden have been trying to crack the police market in the US for some time. Latest that I've read suggests that Ford has won the contract with a new interceptor.

Re: Can GM ever learn to be cool?

Haven´t they done a good job on the Holden Caprice? With some reservations about the grille, the rest looks quite purposeful.
