The Greatest Cars of the last 50 years

Sorry to carp but there is a serious graphic flaw in the poll. The button for a given car and the name of the car are offset. How many people are going to make mistaken choices because they couldn´t pick the correct button? Surely CAR can do better than its own variation of the Florida Presidential Polling fiasco. And why not have a ranking system where you choose only a limited number of cars. Framing will affect this poll since people will vote for what is presented to them. Please revise.

Re: The Best Car of the last 50 years

And another thing: which version? The BMW 5 is not one but six different cars. The first version was fairly unremarkable with dodgy lift off oversteer and bad packaging. The 1988 model was the one which cemented the 5 as a titan in the premium car class. Please attach years to the model names. Ditto the Maserati QP, none of which are among the greatest cars of the last 50 years, although some looked nice (and some looked like overgrown Hyundai Stellars). Please revise this poll. It´s badly laid out and vague.

I´m not bothering to vote, by the way.

Re: The Best Car of the last 50 years

I did a rough analysis. I found three cars which were ineligible, being launched more than 50 years ago. Out go the Defender, Mini and 2CV. I suppose the Beetle was excluded on those grounds.

There was one American car.

No Lancia despite their huge work in engine and suspension design.

The Cisitalia was ommitted, though long understood to be the template for post war car styling.

The Renault 16 was omitted along with the BMW 2002 or the later 3 series which respectively set the standard for family hatchbacks and small sporting saloons and which altered the axis of the car industry forever. You could also have included that Alfa Romeo Giulia which BMW used as a benchmark.

The Audi TT is a redressed Golf. Where is the Audi A8?

About 55% of the cars are sports cars or something like it.

One car represented the 50s, the Citroen DS.

The 60s were represented by 29% of the cars.

The 70s were represented by 14%

The 80s were represented by 19%

The 90s to now by  39%. What´s the Smart ForTwo doing in this list?

There´s some rounding error, which means it adds up to 103%, sorry. The point remains.

And not that many Japanese cars, really. Greatness....it´s a tough one to define. I don´t believe some of the cars here warrant that term. Does greatness really apply to the Fiat Multipla (which one?) as much as to the Citroen DS? And what was great about the Lexus LS400 other than that it was really well made.

Does anyone else have any proposals? Could there be added a comments box under the list of cars so people can debate the choices? Or would that compromise the voting, like canvassers outside a polling station?

 Bert,

I understand your criticism, but the offset names can be worked out and omitted cars can be added to the poll. However, I do concur that some of the names are too vague and that sports cars are yet again somewhat overrepresented.

But whatever we discuss here in our dark dungeon is most likely to lead to no consequences whatsoever. I guess that either calls for a riot (2.0 Beta) or a shrug and a dismissal of the poll as just another "blah" affair.

Good ol' B&N . Good to see some things have remained constant ( your ever being aware of potential  errors  as well as your balanced approach to criticizing any given situation )

I didn't notice the offset on my end ( geographic perhaps ? ) but yes to  the lack of American and especially Japanese cars , not naming specific models ( e.g.  if its all M3's no thanks.... if its the E30 M3 then yes please )

The thing I really do not like is trying to claim there is ONE overall BEST car period . I think it shoud be separated into segments e.g. Best Supercar - Best Luxury Car - Best Hot Hatch etc  . How can anyone possibly say one specific car is the end all to end all for a 50 year period ? Thats like comparing John McLaughlin to Segovia to Clapton . In their specific genres they're amongst the best .... but best overall ??? Can't be done IMHO

What to do though ? Can't say I've got a usable suggestion other than perhaps opening up the Comments section on the page . But I did notice CAR is using an outside source for this poll so maybe thats not plausible

Afternoon/evening all,

About the poll gtrslngr - we have had hot hatch polls in the past http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/News/Search-Results/Motoring-issues/Politics/Help-CAR-find-the-best-hot-hatch-of-all-time/

and supercar polls

http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/News/Search-Results/Motoring-issues/Greatest-supercar-of-2010-poll/

So we do run other polls, however as this is a celebration of the last 50 years this is how we have decided to run this poll.

Bertandnairobi - Re: Could there be added a comments box under the list of cars so people can debate the choices?

I will have a look into this and see fi it cane be done, technically.

The buttons being offset - should hopefully be fixed now, if not please let me know which browser you are using and which version, so i can test it correctly.

Thanks SJ
