So, a bog standard positive Evoque review is contaminated by breathtaking southern snobbery. Snobbery about 4-cyclinder engines, and having to travel too far north to experience it. These remarks were particularly offensive: "However, for the average Liverpudlian, the words ‘rat’ and ‘smell’ must spring to mind on a regular basis" and "it is, perhaps, an equally apposite venue at which to consider the car in the context of such reeking rodent musings." I cannot remember a more gratuitously offensive review of a launch location in Car, and I have been reading it for 35 years. It is also completely out of synch with almost every other review that mentioned the city, because they were overwhelmingly positive. It was widely reported that the Evoque launch was an extraordinary success, in no small part played by the daring choice of using its home city as the location to launch a luxury off-roader. The fact that most observers who chose to comment on the location said they would be returning soon says much. And the fact that all of the glamorous pre-launch brochure photography was shot in the city too kind of gives the game away about the author's bigotry and ignorance. The surprising lack of rats in Liverpool is easily explained: He quickly left to scurry home and write his revolting review.

The lesser diesel proves so lethargic it has to find a park bench for a little sit down on the way from 0 to 62mph

This sentence is just sublime - worth reading the whole article just for this.

A fair summary of its strengths and weaknesses I think. Can the Jaguar V6 diesel really not fit in this body because, with that on board, especially in 271 HP S form,, it would surely be a perfect small (in everything but price) Range Rover

I concur Bernie... Very very snobby attitude to Liverpool CAR, I'm disappointed. As for the 4 cylinder argument, it's ignorance, old fashioned attitudes in spite of advancements in efficiency and refinement.... I enjoy ff-C's prose and eloquent turn of phrase, but such condescending attitudes make even Noel Coward look like Sid James....

Having derided the efforts to rejuvenate Liverpool, ff-C could have pointed out the economic benefit to the regoin from the not-inconsiderable investment by JLR into the Halewood plant and the consequent increase in employment there from the success of the Evoque.

And just why is the Range rover Sport 'irritatingly' successful?  Just what is wrong with both making the Range Rover brand more affordable and a British product success?

As for the nonsense about 4-cylinder engines, how about Mercedes S-class with mere 4-pots, or the incredulously badged BMW 328 that is now deficient in the cylinder department and in swept volume at a mere 2 litres and 4 pistons?

So, a beautifully worded article, but the content leaves much to be desired - unlike the Evoque, which is both beautiful and desirable.

All in all...A lousy review. Why waste so much time slagging off Liverpool? A city I detest BTW but I don't read car reviews for that sort of thing.
Back to business: I've driven, quite extensively by comparison, the 187BHP diesel and can say with all honestly it will do more than enough for most people, how many cylinders it has is irrelevant, it shot me around the back roads of Cyprus with ease and enjoyment, with the crazy tax system we have here the V6 will also be irrelevant.

I can drive anything except a Zerox 7665!

Comments and derisions about Liverpool aside : all negative remarks here should  of been aimed at the Evoque .  But since ff-C didn't .. allow me to do so

I drove and Evoque before  making my recent purchase decision . Drove one again extensively after I bought the current ride to see what all the fuss was about as wel as to confirm/deny my initial reactions .

Here's my thoughts on the US Evoque ....... its a Joke ..... being foisted on a Trendcentric , overly Fashion consious , deluded public with more money than discernment and an unhealthy desire to appear ' Hip(ster)'

Right out the gate the blind spots in this thing are abysmal and inexcusable . When a C6 Corvette and a Porsche Caymen have less blind spots than a pretentious wanna be SUV you KNOW something is wrong in the World of Automotive design - Then there's the interior quality / fit & finsih . Pedestrian FORD quality in a Mercedes priced vehicle . Brilliant   Oh but lets drive the thing . Isn't this supposed to be JLR's answer to the MINI ? Well folks ... it is not . The handling barely superceding that of a pedestrian RAV4 , the acceleration somehwere between a RAV4 and the new MAZDA , and all the ride and comfort of a washboard being dragged down a bumpy road . But hey ... lets give it the welly on a bit of Off Roading ... maybe thats the problem ... compromising to keep LR's off road reputation intact ....... but .... NOPE ... the thing is a joke off road . Truth be known it comes nowhere near the cababilities of the Subaru Forester ... with the Forester having a much more comfortable ride . Factor in  the fact that the Evoque is NOTHING more than a FORD Focus in Drag with a pretentious and barely  functioning AWD system and well ...... can you spell R-I-P  O-F-F ?

Then ... comparing the Evoque to my GLK ( which y'all haven't gotten yet ) The GLK is less money / bigger / faster / handles better ( w/AMG package ) has more room / twice as comfortable .... and ....... I CAN SEE  out of the bloody thing without the aid of ten onboard cameras !!!!! Not to mention its a Benz .. with Benz reliability ( Land/Range Rover is the least reliable brand sold in the US ... period .. ten years running )

So ...... other than being a playtting for the Terminally Brand / Fashion Concious ( who know nothing about cars ) Trendy - Suburban/Urban - Hipster Wanna Be set ... can someone here please inform me ....... WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS LITTLE _____

But .... as to Liverpool . Give ff-C a break there folks . He's right . Liverpool being your ( UK ) Detroit . The only thing good ever coming out of the place ( and even  this is debatable IMO ) was the Beattles

Sorry folks ... but we all have our dredges when it comes to cities and towns

Rock On - Drive On - Remain Calm - and Carry On

@ GTR. You state that 'Land/Range Rover is the least reliable brand sold in the US ... period .. ten years running' yet in recent days you stated on the Cherokee SRT article that 'JEEP still has the lowest reliability rating of all US brands along with one of the lowest amongst all cars sold in the US'

Which is it to be mate, or is it just mud slinging?

As for the Evoque, my ongoing opinion is that it offers ridiculously poor value for money. £40,000 (and the rest) for this? Come on!!!

Mind. They are a business, and if people buy it (which they shall) and Land Rover prosper then good on them.

They say that a dog is mans best friend. This simple experiment proves this. Lock your missus and your dog in the boot of your car. Return to let them out after an hour and see which one is most pleased to see you....

Land Rover is a British marque and Jeep is American.  Jeep being the worst American brand would not make it necessarily the worst brand sold in America.  If that dubious honour goes to Land Rover/Range Rover and Jeep is only a few places ahead of it then both statements would be true.

I agree the city bashing was uncalled for though there was only one thing that could truly be called bashing (butterfly in a bomb hole) with the rest saying that Liverpool got the shaft from the officials who tried to make it a city of culture but didn't worry about what was going on to those who live there to keep jobs and livlihoods there.  The rats in a sub-terranean river is expected no matter where you are.

Finally, with an Evoque in the long-term fleet, wasn't it a bit superfluous to devote a large piece to a variant on the same especially as the basics has been covered for over a year by everybody and his brother?  I love Car and perhaps the website is viewed as a place where mediocre stories go to rot but it shouldn't be that way and it doesn't have to be that way.  Give us news, scoops, debates and even the occasional car test as long as it truly newsworthy and not a way to justify a writer's expenses for a trip.  Mr. ff-C could be the next George Bishop if you let him deal with the PR machinations of a launch rather than the banality of the cars themselves.  Give it a try, he might surprise you!

Not only was this a lousy review, it is also weird in an important respect: I thought the tunnels were opened only for last year’s Evoque launch. If so, why publish this now? Maybe it was spiked because it was so incompetent and offensive and has re-appeared here by mistake? Or perhaps LR has recently re-staged the tunnel demo because it was so successful last time?  Whatever the reason, Car should not be publishing such tripe. For me, Liverpool is bit like Milton Keynes: disliked only be people who have never bothered to take the time for a proper visit. Which makes this review even stranger, and even more offensive.

Liverpool is a terrific place - I worked there for 4 years. GTRslinger - you are talking absolute nonsense.

One question - how many people who lauded the concept in 2008, shouting, "Build it!" are the ones now rubbishing the car as shallow / fashionista etc? I think it's quite a few, and I despair at their sheep like responses.

I accept that the car is expensive - too expensive. However, you don't have to pay £40k, and the real life running costs are pretty decent (low depreciation) which offsets this. The question is this; does yoiur enjoyment of this car justify the ownership cost? I think that for many, that's an easy yes. I do understand though if the answer is no. Sadly, most of the alternatives are ugly munters (well, the BMW ones are) but there is the Kia Sportive; great car; shame the interior isn't better.

For what it's worth, I loved the concept car, and I love the production version. I am delighted that JLR are being rewarded by the public for being brave enough to put the concept into production virtually unaltered. I've been in one. It looks and feels amazing. I don't give a jot who else drives this car, what Victoria Beckham's involvement is etc. What's that got to do with whether or not I buy the car? People who buy (or reject things based on image (what it might or might not say about them) are sad shallow insecure people. Sadly there are many of them about.
