SELECTIVE FORUM INDEX

In a year when Car is archiving some of its own finest journalism on this site, I thought it might be useful to index some of the contributions to this Forum, since these things often attract enthusiastic activity, then suddenly disappear and become hard to find again. This is a list of threads I’ve enjoyed reading, threads I’ve enjoyed contributing to and threads that I’d like to draw attention to, because I feel that they have gone into undeserved obscurity without being fully exploited. It’s a personal judgement, but add anything you think is missing, though please try to show them with proper links since the intention is that others can find them easily.

Re: SELECTIVE FORUM INDEX

If you people buzz off who I will be directing my ideas at?  The reason the forum is any good is because we have high expectations of each other. Other forums are populated by chad. Thank you goatboy for the salutation. Am I intimidating? Wow! See you all soon. I know you are still out there.

So does that mean I've chosen the wrong time to come back to this forum? I feel a little sad, as I always did when it started to decline after the 'big bust up.'

There was never many people in the first place, but hey it was/ is full of intelligence rather than comments often made in a very popular forum. Also here everyones 'knows' one another unlike the previously mentioned forum. I'll keep posting if people are to stay.

Re: SELECTIVE FORUM INDEX

Too much schmaltzy stuff being written here today, and I'm struggling to understand why some people feel they have to announce that they're 'leaving'. It's a forum and the door is always open, whether on the way in or out. Some people are irreplaceable, but no one is indispensable. Some people get tired and need to take a break, some have other priorities. Either way it's no big deal, and certainly not the end of the world. Just move on and take things as they come.

And of course it's never too late to reconsider

Leave it to StE to take the sentimentality out of this and tell it like it is! (He's quite astute, except when he questions my lookalike suggestions.) Anyway, I was just looking for my "AReader last will and testament" thread (which it turns out is in this very room - I've just brought it back to life) and was amazed by the number of great threads that have sunk off the first page of this (and I suspect and every) room. While I like seant's Selective Index, I have to say that it only scratches the surface of "The Elephant in the Room" just "Ask Batty"!

As AReader says, well said Sam. I really am off, but I want to have something to look at and entertain me, so the rest of you had better stay.  But in defence of the schmaltz, the virtual world is a delicate place.  Servers crash, links are broken, electrons vaporised and email addresses are deleted. Then, people you’ve got attached to on some level are suddenly lost forever - I mean, where exactly is the 'Southern Hemisphere'? So I guess we sometimes take the opportunity to blurt these things out, in a repressed, manly way (I do make the assumption that the people I know on the back pages are all male, since think that's the case, though I've always found that slightly disappointing).

Anyway, speaking for myself, the reason I announce "I'M LEAVING!" is not like some sulky child "AND PHIL McNAMARA WILL MISS ME WHEN I'M GONE AND JOHNNY BIMMER HAS KIDNAPPED ME AND MADE ME WORK IN HIS MINES!”. It's because if I don't say it 'aloud' I won't do it, weak-willed fool that I am. So, rally round, create some new threads, re-invigorate to some old ones, welcome back Joe and Gtrslngr, and tell AReader to add links to the two threads he's mentioned. Persuade ga41, morepowerigor and lokinen to post more (they all made me welcome when I started posting and, incidentally, one of the first things I was told was that the site wasn’t what it was).  And attract some new people.

AReader, how could I forget 'The Elephant In The Room'? What a creation of sublime genius. How we will all miss me. Except I'm sure I'll come back. Sometime. Weak willled ,,,,etc.

And Joe, I hope the course is going well. But what was 'The Big Bust Up"? Was that before my time?

Gtrslngr, you know the answer - you are undisputed King of the Last and Only, Ultimate and Final, Farewell Valedictory Concert, now running for an indefinite period.

I really am off now. The taxi is hooting.  The Press are outside my front door. Beneath the dark glasses my eyes are full of tears. I love you all, you fabulous, wonderful, beautiful, talented people ...... except Sam, who's a twat.

I do hope seant looks in now and again. Well, I´ll hang around. Absent a huge job test driving cars and writing incisive, provokative and impeccable prose I have no other outlet for my brand of genius.
