Any thoughts on this classic Merc

 Hello all. As many of you will have gathered, whilst I have huge respect for many classics, it's not where my knowledge is highest. An old friend is seriously looking at the below as we speak. Do any of the forum regulars (and Kubrick & Bert spring to mind!) have greater knowledge about them than I and care to share their thoughts/ words of wisdom?

 I'm no fintail expert, but I presume the same rules apply as to other Mercedes models from that period: they're usually robust - apart from their propensity to rust. Your friend should therefore check the bodywork particularly carefully and - if none of the typical cellulitis is apparent - make sure that it's still made mostly of steel, rather than filler.

As for the Benz's mechanics, I can only recommend to find one of the usual buyer's guides. These cars were made of top grade components back in the day, but there will inevitably be some weak spots.

 Robby good sir ,fancy meeting you here ( after a bit of inboxing )

As a matter of fact I'm a Benz owner and afficianado myself  ...... so what specific questions might you or your freind have about this particular model ?

If I can't answer myself ... I can as a member pose the questions to the MBOC / Classic Benz forum ( members only ) and get the low down most likely from an owner or two .

Hit me either here or on the inbox . May take a day or two but I'll get the answers for you .

And while you're assembling the questions may I present a bit of Benz entertainment to put a smile on your and everyone elses  face looking in  . Das Classic  Benz Hot Rod ;

 Thank you both for your advice, I shall ping him a message and ask if he has decided to take the plunge or not.

And a kind offer GTR, but I recall the auction ends tonight? If he decides to not be reckless he may well take the plunge on another though. He's loved old Mercs since his rather leftfield choice of first car 18 years ago, a W123 estate.

Guess what mate ? Taking a look at my back issues of Mercedes Benz Classic and ' The Star ' (MBOC members magazine ) and what did I find ? Two specific articles on buying this very model .

Here's what I've gleened ;

1) As with any Classic Benz a complete and thorough going thru is highly recommended ( putting a damper on the auction idea ) These are extremely durable and reliable older Benz's but ...... if something major is wrong ........ its gonna cost you !

2) These models are considered to be the most desirable of the affordable collectable Benz's . Having said that ..... the price on this for US standards is a bit high ( found two under $4700 ... starting price )

3) Rust is a common issue in and around the tail lights and fins

4) Mainenance is as with any Benz .... expensive .... but again if sorted out these cars are usually troube free and a joy to drive .

My own advice when it comes to buying any Classic auto ...... coming from Jay Leno and Clive Cussler is ......

Buy the car from its owner ..... not an online or otherwise auction regardless of the reputation

Hope that dissuades the friend ..... not from buying a Classic Benz .... but rather from buying one thru EBay ...... Auction Houses etc .

His best bet if a Classic Benz it what he desires is to contact his local Mercedes Benz Owners Club directly . They can ( and will ) give him advice - help him to track down a good car - point him to good mechanics in his area etc . Despite the Mercedes stigma 95% of the MBOC members I've met worldwide are a good bunch and more than willing to help . Membership ( he can join after he buys one ) also  gets you a ton of discounts on parts / labor etc as well ....... so worth  the price ( modest ) of entry .

Cheers mate !
