Whats your favourite 911?

The Porsche 911 has gone through more than a few variants over its forty year history.  The 901, 911, 930, 964, 993, 996, 997 and, and and.

Whats your favourite?

For me its the 1969-1989 model years (pre and post inmpact bumpers).  The core the shape has remained and can still be seen in the later models, but there's just something about the older models that grabs my heart. Many people say they are harder to drive and dangerous at that.  But I have never found that.  The rear end sliding away is something I have found hard to get the car to do, unless you lift off the power under cornering.  Its a real drivers car and closely links the driver to the road.....

Martini Racing 935...that was the car I put aside when naming my favourite 911 road car.  Mind you, I think the appeal to me had a lot to do with this guy, rather than being a keen follower of '70s racing.

The 996 with those cool looking headlights and the cop one (you call 911 for a 911).

Re: Whats your favourite 911?

tail happy and lift off overstear.

These are two phrases you often hear about the 911.

As a driver of a 911 for some many years, I would say this:

Lift off overstear occurs when you are negotiating a highspeed turn and then decide the take you foot off the right hand pedal.  This can result in loss of traction and loosing the rear end.  If you know how to drive your 911 this shouldnt happen.

Tail happy refers to the same thing really.  The engine and therefore weight is in the back.  For an unsuspecting driver this might cause a problem.

I have had veery different experiences from the this though.  I find the 911 grips like its on rails.  If anything I find it slightly understeers.

For me its the 1989  Turbo, followed very closely ,and on a different day it could be the first choice, turbo exactly as GA has described.Personall cant bear the fried egg headlamp 996,especially as it was reported that materials and build quality had been parred back also.

IMHO the older 911's look the best and are built the best.  The 996 looks aweful.  The 997 is an improvement I must admit.
