The moment of truth: does the new Ferrari 458 move the supercar goalposts? We test drive the new Italia to find out

I have no doubts bout Ferrari could deliver a good piece of work to replace the 430. however, for me, individually, just the interior. they look like a stupid japanese cartoon. anyway, I like the f355 interior. honestly.

Indeed at last we can all agree that motoring can be fun! (Hurrah).    This (Ferrari) kind of fun is for the lucky few, but  even we relative paupers can enjoy it vicariously via Car.   As to the "tail-wagging" etc, I rarely do it (it upsets the children) but that is because I drive either a fwd Panda, or an Elise.  In the former its nigh-on impossible, in the latter usually a precursor to some expensive bodywork work.

I am also constitutionally unable to drive at any great speed on Public Roads.  Wheras I frequently hit (say) 6 or 7 tenths in the Lotus, I doubt I'd get the Fezza near 3/10ths -  the potential is just so great.    So in my fanatasy I'd buy one and track it, and be able to enjoy all the brilliant engineering to the full.   I might occasionally potter about just to show off as well......

So it goes...

Tried to get behind the wheel of an Elise. Did do with great effort. Thoroughly enjoyed my track day. Trying to get proved almost impossible - legs straight, caught at a precarious angle between seat edge and steering wheel, all I could do was fall backwards and call for assistance. I stare in wonderment at those men who use them as everyday transport, to and from the office.

Gone are the days when, to get a design past the basic hurdle of acceptance by company management, it had to have good all round vision, and access and egress. All that has been jettisoned for cars the size of Burago models, with little or no rear vision, plus side vision obscured by thick A pillars. Much as I admire Lotus's philosophy of lightness - it leads the way - and their engineering gifts with suspension geometry, I am bound to add that any car conceived the size of a a go-kart is bound to nip around tight corners fantasically well, and accelerate swiftly propelled by a strong elastic band. No, an Elise is not for me. Sorry.

I'll take a Ferarri, preferably of old, any day, and all the calls of "tosser" rather than a butch biscuit tin.

It somehow looks more Korean than Italian... sure it is a good car, but... whats up with the eastern style? Ferrari ARE Italians, the world WANTS the Italian style, make an ITALIAN car...?!!

If I was buying I would be driving the McLaren before I would be driving this...

Incidentally Car, does Ferrari make a 'senior' V8?

Snark, I'm 6'3" / 18stone and I found getting in, driving and getting out of the Elise surprisingly easy. You were simply doing it incorrectly.

Atomic - we may yet see a "senior" V8 from ferrari when they start scaling back the engine sizes and adding turbos to everything...

Very nice car indeed.

The McLaren 12C better be awfully good. I'm glad the 458 Italia is released so far ahead of the 12C. It gives the McLaren technical team a clear objective to aim at.

I first came across this car in our company's and stopped cold -- a 450-what?? Now that I've learned so much more about it, I am totally in love. I'm still financially quite a ways from affording my own Ferrari, but this would be a great place to start when I get there. I love the balance of performance with tech, economy with efficiency. What a great vehicle from Ferrari.
