Re: Ghost of LJK Setright

 Recently reading the Press on the Anniversary of the McLaren F1 road car I came upon this shopping list of what LJKS would of rather spent his £540,000 on instead of the McLaren.

1) Bristol Blenheim  ( with options )

2) Honda NSX

3) Honda NSX automatic

4) Honda Prelude  VTECC ( with options )

5) OM 2 liter ( low chasiss )

6) Bristol 403

7) Honda RC45 M/C

   and about £20,000 worth of books .

     And he still had £140,000 left over from the price of the F1 ! Which he'd spend on a Bugatti Type 13 or a Light Company Rocket , including events and a garage .

    One has to wonder if LJKS was still with us what his shopping list would look like today for the price of a new Bugatti Veyron ?

   Any thoughts ?

 I'm too young really to have appreciated LJKS at the time I was reading him, being as I was too young to have driven anything and too naive to realise that not every magazine had a contributor like him. Car was all I knew.

I did read all his columns in the issues my pocket money afforded me though, whereas i skimmed through the other Frontline columnists, always making sure I kept up to date with Bishop's Colts and diet.

I remember the issue in which LJKS gave a better use for the price of an F1; in fact I will still have it somewhere. Although I knew little about the cars he selected I agreed entirely with him that a lot of knowledge and a garage containing a number of cars that do different things peerlessly is preferable to one that is merely very fast.

I can't imagine there are many cars he would add to that list with the extra cost of the Veyron, but then that is perhaps because there is no-one writing today that gives the insight and information that he used to. I just don't know about the engineering in modern cars because it isn't written about in the same way. I recall his love of Hondas, but I just don't know enough about the engineering of those that have been launched post-LJKS to be begin to speculate what he would have thought of them.

I think he would have bought an aeroplane actually.

Mr. Toad ;

       First of all great moniker ! Find one of the etchings or watercolors and add a Mr. Toad Avatar to your posts if you would ! Wish I'd of thought of that moniker myself !

       Second ; Young you may be good sir , but reading your post may I say you truly " Get It " when it comes to  LJKS and his writings . Two thumbs up on your post here !

       Third ; The point of this current thread on " What to purchase for the cost of a Veyron " is to come up with a wish list of your own . Maybe I wasn't entirely clear about that in my post . It would be rather " Futile " for any of us to guess what LJKS would do these days , but we can certainly create our own List of what to buy for that amount of money .

        So please Mr. Toad give it a go . There's no right or wrong answer here . The only requirement being you have enough of a dislike of the Veyron to use your virtual money elsewhere .

       I am compiling my own list , but will wait for others to post before putting up mine .

-------------------

Batty ;

        I kind of doubt LJKS would buy an airplane . But if thats your choice for the price of a Veyron thats just fine .( But I'd prefer an automotive shopping list if you don't mind )If not , come up with your own shopping list . I'll bet I can guess at least one brand that will show up on it . Hee Hee !

Used for a MF3. You find loads of MF3 with proper near Taxi beating milages.

My list would comprise

1 . Alfa 8C 2900 Mille Miglia

2.

Damn, I seem to owe you £1,700,000 already. Though if it makes it any cheaper, I wouldn't want it nearly as shiny as the one in the photo. Maybe I'd better have another thought.

Otherwise, can I just borrow from Joe's garage instead. That LM002 sounds great fun, but I'm too much of a snob (see separate thread) to ask for it myself.

Re: Ghost of LJK Setright

Well yes you can. What I would like to do is tow my Wally Tender with the Rambo-Lambo though London somewhere. The boat would be in this cool copper colour, I saw one in a bay last year on holiday as we rowed around it in our kayak. I suppose you could have the whole garage as I would be wrapped around a tree in my S4.... or stuck in the middle of knowwhere in my broken down GTV.

Re: Ghost of LJK Setright

I don't wish to be contrary, or perhaps I do, anyway- I think I would take the Veyron.

As an engineer there is something uniquely appealing about it. Sure it is immeasurably ugly, but then if it were too pretty, it would appeal to more of the empty headed Hollywood types. There will be no other car like it, ever. It is reliable and yet powerful, heavy yet delicate to operate, it isn't overweight because of lack of intuition or overcompensation but because it needs to carry all the things it needs to go that quickly, it is what it is because it can do what it does- repeatedly. Where can you use the speed? Nowhere really but something being superfluous doesn't deny it relevance (else men's nipples wouldn't exist and our chests would look odd).

So there you have it, if I could afford it I would buy the Veyron, because it is unique, and as my garage can only hold two cars and my wife and children won't fit in the Bugatti, she needs a car as well.

Oooh shiny!
