Cyprus: Peyia-Latchi with Z4 M, S2000, TT (with video)

I do these sort of topics on a few other forums i hang out so i thought why not here as well. Might be helpful to anyone thinking about travelling to Cyprus.

I recently discovered a Cypriot car forum which the name alone will provide most of the information you need about it. It's called StreetRacersCY. As you can imagine most of them get off with street racing, drag racing, drifting and Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) cars like modified Skylines, Evolutions and the like. I was expecting that. What I didn't expect though is that amongst all the boi-racer types there are some actual driving enthusiasts. OK maybe their taste in cars isn't up to the standards of the fine gentlemen who frequent the boards here but there are some users who genuinely enjoy driving in the same way I do. Great scenery, twisty mountain roads, good chassis balance. Just you and the road.

So anyway, I met up with a mate of mine (2007 Audi TT) and a mate from the aforementioned forum (2008 Honda S2000) and we went for a drive a few days ago. The route was from Paphos town to near Peyia (the road to Coral Bay if you're familiar with the area) and then turning right to take the road to Polis and Latchi. We drove all the way there making only one stop for petrol before the fun bits of the route. We arrived at around 19:00 in Latchi, drove to a cafe over there for a couple of frappes and some car chat. A couple of hours later we headed back and took the main Latchi/Polis - Paphos road which in itself is a lovely scenic road but unfortunately it comes with much more traffic, as was the case on that evening..

Anyway it's a brilliant route the Peyia - Latchi road with mostly medium-fast corners along with a dash of slow to medium ones. Great scenery, usually light traffic and mostly well surfaced. Returning from Latchi on the same road is even better as there is a lovely section of uphill slow-medium corners which just beg you take them in 2nd the car screaming to eight thousand RPM. Also if you do it in the afternoon there are amazing views of the sun setting in the sea as you're nearing Peyia. Excellent run overall and one of my favourites.

The route is this one right here: maps.google.com/maps/ms

OK, to the admittedly slightly too long video now! I would have even more footage along with pictures but my camera died a couple of kilometers before reaching Latchi... here you go, hope you enjoy.

Well no videos unfortunately ( predates  the age of IPhones ) but I thought I'd toss up the description of one of my more memorable drives here as well if you don't mind .

1991 ; Highway 11 from Bellingham WA- Samish Bay . Basically Washington States Coastal Dream Highway ( for any Yanks reading , most of Mazda and several other Manufactures Coastal Commercials are filmed here so you've seen the road . Fantastic ! )

In............................ hold on to it mate . An Associates Ferrari F40 ! To be honest it was the wrong car for the road ( a smaller Rally Replica , Elise or Caterham  would suit the road better ) But oh baby what a Wrong Car to be driving on this piece of Asphalt .

The F40 falls into the three cars I've driven  to unnerve me category . The F40 being the car I was convinced  wanted to hurt me . Interesting that around the same year another F40 did hurt one of the Top WRC drivers , Francios Delecour . So I guess that perception was correct .

(of the other two , one had me convinced it wanted to kill me and the other just scared the heck out of me )

Lucky bugger.

Myself i'd be thrilled if i drove  a Ferrari. Any Ferrari. It's bound to happen sooner or later right?

How did you find it? Other than scary? Sights? Sounds? Do tell!

First off mate your videos ( this and the one you sent me ) show Cyprus is not lacking for fantastic roads as well as drivers . I'm (bleep) jealous .

How did I find the F40 ? Well to sum it up ( I've been catching a lot of flak of late for being too wordy ) Violent. ( the acceleration hits out of nowhere with the Turbo lag ) Go Kart ( on a large scale ) handling . Vicious and fairly unpredictable brakes ( but they work when you need them ) Very coarse interior ( bit of a let down for a Ferrari but that was the intent . Race Car for the Road ) And as I said really not made for the B - Roads of the world , but rather fast sweeping highways .

Smells ? Think Race Car and you'll be close . The styling ? Truth be known I like the 288 GTO better but the F40 has its place . Sounds ? Well the one I drove had the aftermarket exhaust ( TUBI Maybe ? ) so it shrieked like the Devil having his bum stuck on his pitch fork . Earplugs mandatory . How he got this F40  licensed for the road is beyond me . Well except when driven moderately ( yeah right ) the sound was reasonable .

Overall ? One screaming HOOT of a time . Got a great Renault R5 Turbo tale if you'd like that one tomorrow . But in the mean time , keep those Cyprus tales and videos coming . And ahhh ..... get the Caterham . That thing will be brilliant on those roads .

The F40 is one of the all time greats in my opinion. Yes it's flawed but i kind of like flawed cars. I wouldnt have bought my M if i didnt. The reviews make it sound horrible (it really isnt!) but i still went ahead and bought it.

The steering is very heavy, the clutch is very heavy, the transmission is notchy, solid, stiff and clunks and pops when changing gears in town, the diff crunches and clanks in parking speeds and the handling? Well, you really have to grab it by the scruff of the neck and wrestle it to submission but the noise! Those sexy muscular looks! I still sometimes look at it from a far and say "Damn. Do i really own that?" This car really gets under your skin. It's a keeper!

My point is that you might buy a car because of its characteristics but you love one despite them.

Well then you'll understand ( though most think I'm crazy ) why I have a real thing for the Z3M Coupe . Flawed ? Well sort of . Ugly ? Yeah honestly it is . But out and out pure, lunatic , lairy , insane and a laugh a minute to drive ? Well yes it is . A German Shelby Cobra for the 20th century .

And who the heck claims the Z4M is flawed ? Every review I've seen or read ( except the 500 lb gorilla Clarksons review ) loved the car . Me as well .

Funny you should mention the Z3 M Coupe. I met a guy on that Cypriot forum i mentioned before that has one of the later ones! We're gonna arrange a meet and swap cars for a bit to compare!

another vote for the Z3 M Coupé. I wouldn't call it ugly, a bit challenging on the eye maybe but to me it looks like a modern take on something that was produced in the 60's, except that it wasn't - if that makes any sense?

ga41 - I quite like the vid too. What kind of camera did you use for it?
