Audi R8 5.2 V10 FSI (2009) CAR review

Meet the £100k Audi: the R8 V10. Yes, it looks suspiciously similar to the £77k V8-powered version, but spotters can tell it apart thanks to those new 19-inch rims, thicker side blades, revised strakes on the front and rear bumpers and even more in-your-face LED headlights.

So, £20k more and the R8 5.2 V10 FSI still looks the same…

Yes, even inside the R8 V10 looks similar to its lesser-potted sibling. And while that could be a disappointment, the real bonus comes from the new V10 powerplant. It gives the new car a 105bhp/74lb ft advantage over the V8.

If you’ve driven the R8 V8 you’ll appreciate how perfectly balanced it is: a grippy but playful chassis with the bias set so firmly to the rear that it feels rear-wheel drive most of the time; a lovely engine; a superbly satisfying manual gear change; beautifully weighted steering, unbelievably supple ride.

Has importing Lambo's V10 ruined the R8's balance?

My fear was that the extra power could upset the balance. Not so. It simply gives the R8's sublime chassis the extra power it can so easily exploit, and makes the V8 feel ever so slightly pedestrian in comparison – the rest of the high points are all present and correct. But the engine deserves special praise.

The new 5.2 V10 is so smooth and refined, with an effortless surge of elastic acceleration from way down low. Wind it towards the 8000rpm redline, however, and the soundtrack takes on a highly addictive hard-edged wail. So, loads of torque and flexibility and refinement for daily driving coupled with a race-car soundtrack when you’re in hooligan mode. Perfect.

The R8 V10 doesn’t quite have the bonkers pace of the Lambo LP560-4 – despite the stats suggesting otherwise – but make no mistake, this is a very, very rapid car.

For me the R8 has to be the ultimate everyday car. Audi has managed to create a mental looking mid engined hypercar that you can comfortably drive to work daily, see out of, get admiring looks in, yet without people thinking you're a t*sser like a Porsche.

I would be interested to see what the service costs and intervals are on an Audi R8 compared to rivals, as the Lambo Gallardos are hideous. If these remain manageable  and stay more affordable than a Porsche it will only further the cars cause.

rbt66 - Couldn't agree more. Audi deserve far more credit than they get in the main, although I do do my best to extol the virtues of the four rings to anyone who shows the vaguest of interest lol. The old 911 vs R8 decision is all too easy in my mind (yes, I've driven both, track & road). The 911 is all too yesteryear and doesn't even command the mildest of head-turns round my way... the R8 on the other hand is a show stopping design, which commands the respect of officianados and school boys alike. In terms of driver appeal, to me it all about 'real world' use and the Porsche is far too compromised on UK roads for two thirds of the year! My mates 57 plate 911S has been an expensive driveway accessory for the last 6 months, not good when conscious of depreciation, I want maximum usage when I want it, not when weather permits....

There's no question that the Audi is serious competition for the 911. It's somehow more exotic. The interior is MUCH better than the 911! It's probably a better combination of drivability and fun. Yet I find myself probably still wanting a 911 more. Especially a GT3. Perhaps it's the fact that it is a more focused sports car, nevermind it's inherent compromises in terms of layout and the fact that it will probably be blasted away by the Audi on a mildly slippery track (not to mention road). I don't know - if I was in the market for either of those vehicles I would have to drive both cars AND the Nissan GT-R before, ultimately, making a decision. The GT-R just might make mincemeat of the R8 too.

I get fed up hearing that Audi couldn't do this without Lamborghini, that without Bentley and that Audi uses Lamborghini engines. The truth - the Gallardo is an Audi design with wait for it an Audi V10, whilst the Bentley Continental GT Coupe is merely an A8 without a spaceframe (nee VW Phaeton SWB). The Lamborghini V10 engines in the S6 and S8 are you guessed it - Audi engines! Come on lets give Audi some credit! As for the V10 R8 - sounds a fantastic car but what it really needs is the blown RS6 engine or more to the point a lightweight stripped out car akin to the 360 CS or 430 Scud. My choice at the moment? I am off to get the new RS6.
