Audi S3 Sportback (2008) CAR review

By Adam Towler

The Audi S3 Sportback is the latest Audi niche performance car - the mechanicals of the three-door S3 being shoehorned into the five-door Sportback A3 body. Its introduction coincides with a mild facelift across the A3 range as a whole that includes some new engines and detail engineering updates.

So it’s exactly the same as the current Audi S3 but with two extra doors?

Almost. Although there are changes to many of the power units, the potent 261bhp turbo ‘four’ is carried straight over, along with the Quattro four-wheel system. However, all Quattros have revised electronics for the Haldex differential so that it reacts faster in the distribution of torque to the rear axle. The suspension is unchanged, but Audi’s Magnetic ride variable damping system – as seen on the TT and R8 - is now available as an option.

The S3's usual visual bite is applied to the new A3's general makeover that consists of subtle alterations to the front bumper, headlamps and tail lamps, along with minor developments to trim and texture inside, and a new dial pack.

Feels much the same on the road then?

Yes it does: the strengthened TFSI engine is at its gruff and growling best, pulling heartily from low revs yet sprinting with aerobic conviction, and all the while staying just the right side of raucous. This is a seriously quick car, and although Audi suggests it’s a fraction slower to 60mph – it weighs 40kg more than the three-door – you’d be hard pressed to feel it on the road.

It’s also a very effective way to cover ground quickly thanks to excellent traction, good body control and an entertaining neutrality to the chassis. The nub of this cars appeal is the mix of extreme hot hatch thrills with a premium Audi cockpit, a high perception of build quality throughout and an image considerably more sophisticated than most hot hatches or any rally special rival.

Comment8: Not subsidising maximising personal tax efficency like taking an ISA out - some people will choose to do so some don't althought the benefits are manifaest. We're in turbulent air (hot) now from Politicians and scientists who have mandated a future that a combination product technology and industrial inertia cannot realise. There is bound to be some err reaching by marketing departments until the gap closes.

According to BMWs own figures ED makes zero difference to the Minis economy. It is not sold in OZ with ED as there is no CO2 based taxation. The official consumption figures on the OZ Mini webiste are identical to those of ED UK cars (and equally wide of reality). So much for Dynamic Efficiency (Less Emissions - More Driving pleasure) How does that work then?

Mr. Comment8, you obviously have an issue with BMW marketting. You're entitled to your view. However, BMW have brought ED to a market that, for better or worse, uses CO2 as the measure for setting tax levels. ED responds to this and gives punters real benefits on company car tax, VED and at the pumps. BMW drivers being subsidised by other drivers - don't be daft - we all play the hand we're dealt. You think 33mpg for the Mini was bad - remember the hacks who drive them will have lead in there right feet, and a non-ED version would have done even worse. You think Audi's marketting is more honest by punting the S3 and all the other steroid cars? I don't think so.

So Jer, what your saying is that everyone else is subsidising BMW drivers who pay lower VED and Company Car tax because of the theoretical efficiency of their cars whilst they go on polluting at the same rate as before.

All fuel consummption and Co2 are dpedant on driver habbits, fast or slow use of stop start or not. What is fact is stop start reducues Co2 in the simlation that determines offical Co2 and thus company car and VED tax.
