New Audi S4 saloon (2008) CAR review

The new Audi S4 is either Ingolstadt’s idea of a bad joke or a stroke of genius. If you follow the former line of thought, then you’re from the camp that thinks the economy has jumped off a cliff, gone into freefall and the last thing the world needs is a grunty super-saloon.

But if you side with the latter then Audi’s timing with the S4 couldn’t be more apt – the company has replaced its old 4.2-litre V8 with a new, smaller, supercharged V6. This car is potentially very in tune with these downsizing times.

And while the headline power figures might be down, they still surpass the equivalent Mercedes or BMW. The torque figure also bests both (and the old S4), while mpg figures are 26 percent better that before. The new S4 will even cost a few grand less than its predecessor. Time to find out if the drive is as good as the stats...

Start me off with the Audi S4’s new engine – any good?

The big V8 lump from the old car has been dumped, and in comes the direct-injection 2995cc supercharged V6 from the recently revised A6. Only here the 3.0-litre gets a tweak to lift power from 286 to 329bhp, while torque is up from 310 to 325lb ft.

Compared to the old S4’s 344bhp, you might be disappointed that the power figure is down, but then the new car has more torque (versus the old car's 302lb ft) spread across 2900-5300rpm, rather than peaking at 3500rpm. And the new S4 weighs 10kg less, too.

However, this engine doesn’t scream and shout about its power – even Audi’s own PR team admit the S4 is a bit of a whisperer. Personally we’d prefer a more exciting base tune, some more supercharged whine and something to tell us about the top-end fury. Because unlike other blown engines, this S4’s 3.0-litre keeps on going right up the rev range.

That muted sound actually serves to make the S4 seem even quicker than it already is. Tickle the throttle and you’re away – speed is effortless, responses are immediate. The benchmark 0-62mph sprint is dismissed in 5.1 seconds, half a second quicker than the old car, while 50-75mph in fourth gear takes a mere 4.4 seconds.

RE: New Audi S4 saloon (2008) CAR review

It looks quite interesting to me. It's also good to see how audi's going all sensible with that V6, when it's most recent cars have been the likes of the V10 RS6 and R8. And that interior's great (especially the seats) -  a mite better than the rather staid BMW 3-series and C-class. But will customers go greener with Munich's offerings, or will they demand the S4? That is the question.

Style is a matter of taste, but you can measure performance. At least some of it anyway. The S4 has been a bit of a performance secret, but the new car might just break through. I first picked up on this thanks to an old Top Gear programme (now showing on Dave) when the outgoing S4 V8 was pitched against an M3 E46, and it was quicker both in a straight line, and round the track. That really surprised me – an S4 faster than an M3? I didn’t know that! But there’s more. The S4’s superior torque thrashes the M3 on in-gear times, too. I was so impressed, and so disappointed by the M3, that I’ve just picked up a sweet used bargain J The S4’s big advantage is of course 4WD, an ace card that BMW refuses to play in the UK. And while the M3 is often touted as more involving in some ways, when it comes to making rapid progress on Britain’s roads that are so often wet and slithery, it must take a masochist with a death wish to try that in any front-engined RWD car with over 300bhp. So I would say that in this class and on balance, a 4WD car is more fun, more of the time, than RWD. The new S4 is pitched against the 335i and here it answers all criticisms with its smart new diff that can dial in under or over steer at will. The Audi driver can choose, but the BMW’s owner has to put up with lary behaviour no matter what. Both cars are very similar on engines/power, and both now come with the amazing dual-clutch gearbox that VAG has pioneered for years. This is the key to those dramatic economy figures, where its clever programming circumnavigates emissions break points. In other words, unless you drive it like a 1.4l diesel, you’re never going to get anywhere near the headline numbers. It’s a game that every manufacturer is now playing and I believe dual-clutch boxes are set to become standard equipment all round quite soon, but I digress. So, being as objective as possible, the S4’s 4WD wins in terms of speed. Being more subjective, when this is coupled to the new trick diff, it now matches the Beemer’s dynamic behaviour if that’s the way you like it. It’s going to be very fast, in all conditions. Whether this enough to beat BMW’s performance brand image remains to be seen, and price will surely play a big part, but the smart money looks to be on the Audi. No change there then LOL Richard.

Indeed we purchase on a budget and if a quattro is beyond it some may prefer the rear wheel drive 3-Series. I've maintained interior and exterior design is important to me or put another way, Chris Bangle is making BM's look like Hyundais which is a big turn-off having drooled over BMW's design skills for a decade and he's sending me to Audis more cultured and logical designs. I love my 335d coupe exterior but the A4/A5 interior is in another league to Bangles steel gurder door-to-door. I had to fit Sat-Nav just to throw in a curve ball to break up the tedium across the cockpit! And the 335i and 335d engines are peerless. Audi still don't get close. It's all about Bangle for me!

I guess it depends on the spec levels too. If you cant afford a quattro version of the A4 then the BMW 3 will always be a much better drive.

Agree BMW has the edge in engines, chassis, driving experience and probably reliability and dealer/service back-up too from my time with an Audi A6. But on the saloon A4 v 3-Series the A4 for me is now the better - inside and out - I simply like it more than the 3
