Audi S5 7-speed S-tronic (2008) CAR review

By Tim Pollard

Verdict

Would we pick an Audi with the gearbox formerly known as DSG? You bet. The latest seven-speed S tronic adds a smooth drive, lightning gearchanges and decent economics to the S5’s slick appeal. Picking the new auto option will even slightly trim fuel consumption and emissions.

Audi predicts it will cost £1450 on the new models; this transmission is bound for the Q5 coming to the UK in December 2008, the new S4 due in 2009 and numerous other future derivatives of A4, A5 and A6.

It’s a reasonable outlay for a gearbox that can play at being an automatic, a manual and a race car with impressive ease.

I don't agree. The big V8 is what make cars like these so desirable. I don't know anyone who dreams about diesel... People buy them only because they are cheaper. If You can afford S5, and You don't care about fuell consumtion, You will never even look at 3.0 tdi no matter how good this engine is. Diesel will NEVER give You V8-like rumble, and it simply is not cool to drive a diesel.

After the Initial interest in this model the RV is now falling quickly, no one want V8 engines and I can't for the life of me see jusy why all the major players are still running with this theme of V8, even with High PSI Injection the economy figures don't add up. Regardless of what gearbox this car gets sales will be low, and RV very poor.

Externally looks great - much better than the 3 Series Coupe, from the rear at least. The interior lets it down though. It may be well made, hewn from solid, etc., but where's the simple elegance of previous models gone. It's starting to look overdesigned, like so many oriental cars. In this area, BMW has the S5 licked. Finally, who really cares about big petrol V8s at the moment (or big V6s)? Unless your an oil tycoon, the real world motors are the deisels, so lets see some twin turbo small capacity oil burners Audi. BMW and Merc are leaving you behind.

I had a close up look at an Audi A5 3.0TDi quattro in my local stealers last week. Close up i have to say it is a stunning looking car. It was Pearlescent black with 19" wheels. The pics of this car really dont do it justice! I didnt think much of it until i saw it up close. Its low, wide, and looks much more expensive than it is. Im now considering getting one - well, when the A5 2.0TDi is launched.

Another white one!! Agree the S5 looks hellishly like the A4 saloon, in white at least, but that's the formula for sales success BMW have proven.. and Audi wants in on the action. I'd certainly like to see the differentation a little stronger but the S5 V8 with its deep grill sure turns heads. Excellent job Audi.
