Bentley Flying Spur Speed (2008) CAR review

By Georg Kacher

06 November 2008 12:23

Bentley has given its monstrously quick but vaguely anonymous Flying Spur a mild facelift and introduced the aptly entitled Speed go-faster pack to further distance itself from top-end V12-powered Mercedes, BMW and Audi models.

What’s been done to the base Bentley Flying Spur model?

What should have been done when it was launched in 2005, to be blunt. An extensive reworking of the suspension means the Spur now rides with a demeanour far more in keeping with its size and status. Bentley’s engineers call it ‘breathing’ – which means that revised spring, damper and anti-roll bar settings as well as new 19in Pirelli tyres with a softer compound tread pattern and less rigid sidewalls allow the ride quality to strike a decent balance between isolation and contact. The ride may not yet be of the magic carpet kind, but the low-speed bump-thump, the high-speed judder over transverse ridges and the hypersensitivity to grooves has gone.

The Servotronic steering has also been retuned for better feedback on lock and for reduced nervousness around the straight-ahead position, and even more sound insulation makes the car all but silent from idle to around 4500rpm.

So the standard model is all about cushy transport, while the Speed is about, err, speed?

How perceptive of you. Yes, the role of the Speed is to be the sharper handling, more aggressively tuned and more involving counterpart. It’s fitted with stiffer suspension bushings, the ride height is lower by 10mm, there's thicker anti-roll bars front and rear, and fatter 20in Pirellis. The Speed's also fitted with a new Dynamic Mode for increased wheel slip at higher speeds, while the ESP’s Sport Traction mode also raises the intervention bar – perfect if you fancy a quick 70mph powerslide on your way to the club.

mmm..Spur Speed, love the car but i also love the benz S65 AMG will be going for test drive soon, but we all know test drives don't give the true impression of the car so i need some geniune advice on which of the two is a better car to live with and own i know the bentley name has way more weight to it's side than mercedes but that mercedes is an s-class the best of the bunch as we all know it.

This is almost the perfect car. I, like many, have a family and do not want to scrimp on the performance stakes or settle for the cheaper range of second raters. This offers sumptious luxury for 5 people and perfomance to make any other sports car shake. 200mph in style what could be better and so much more classy than other German rivals (if you can call them rivals) which pretend to offer luxury and performance but fail terribly with the luxury and concentrate all their efforts on getting as much uncontrollable power as possible,  Audi S8,BMW M5,Merc AMG's  for just a short list of examples...... Having owned and driven(properly) all these models I have no hesitation in saying the Flying Spur is the best of all of them. powerful beyond belief, extremely comfortable and luxurious, handles like a proper sports car when you get used to the typical Bentley driving style.

ANYONE WHO HAS LEFT NEGATIVE COMMENTS I DOUBT HAS DRIVEN/OWNED THE CAR OR ANY OF ITS RIVALS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  DON'T COMMENT ON ANYTHING YOU HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE ON

I agree with a t o m i c, I think I would rather sacrifice some power and have an S8. I saw one of these the other other day, it had a presence on the road, the thing looks huge, but Im not a fan of its rear, its certainly no match for the Backside of the XF. It looks like the designer slipped with the pencil. Still, from all other angles it looks rather dashing, but for £130,000 I would want the wing mirrors to be bricks of platinum, even if it is a Bentley!

These cars have 50 computers on-board and are extremely sensitive to dead batteries. The hard ride means the cabin will start to creak. Throttle response on the normally aspirated car is delayed. I don't know if it's due to moving 6,000 pounds, or on purpose for safety. Still like my Forester better.

I'm really not green with envy. If your car has >200hp, leather seats, air-con and an auto gearbox, this 'Bentley' offers virtually zero advantage in town, on a motorway or in a traffic jam. On a b-road, this behemoth will likely be heaving handful at much above dawdling pace (I managed to harry a Conti through the woods and he was having a hell of a time keeping the monstrous thing out of the bushes - I eventually got past him and left him for dead). If 'Bentley' want you to pay for the badge, it better be one hell of a badge, coz I can't see this machine offering any more real world value that any decently powerful and luxurious 4 door saloon from BMW, MB, Jaguar, Audi or a host of others. I don't get it.
