Gumpert Apollo S (2008) CAR review

Everything you need to know about the Gumpert Apollo is there from the outset, worn on the sleeve and clearly visible the first time you look at it. Or should that be ‘stare’ at it. Compact, brutish, uncompromising, and fearsomely fast, the Gumpert Apollo looks like an old Group C racer for the road, and it’s probably as quick as one too. But maybe a bit uglier.

So why the silly Gumpert Apollo name?

Roland Gumpert is the engineer who ran Audi motorsport back in the 1980s, when the Quattro was winning all those World Rally Championships. When he retired, he needed a little hobby to keep himself occupied, so he decided to create his own car company, built around a single, extreme product – the Apollo supercar. He used his Audi contacts to good effect – signing up his old mates for everything from the twin turbo 4.2-litre V8, derived from the old RS6 engine, to the Audi windtunnel, where Roland bagged some time for the Apollo’s functional aerodynamics.

It’s German through-and-through then?

Yes, there is something very functional and teutonic about this no-frills supercar, compared to the flair and style of the Italians. It looks like a lump hammer and it’s as crushingly effective as one too.

But with that German frankness also comes a kind of honest purity, and a depth of engineering that puts the Gumpert into a different bracket to most tiny manufacturers with supercar aspirations. Look at the tubular chassis with its carbon safety cell, the pushrod suspension or the bespoke six-speed sequential shift – everything reeks of nerdy attention to detail. In fact, it’s when Gumpert tries to do ‘style’ that it all goes wrong – like the criminally naff griffin emblem, stitched into the seat-backs. Let’s stick to the high-strength chrome-molybdenum steel and double transverse control arm pushrod configuration, eh boys?

Whats your problem with looks of Gumpert? Since someone on Top Gear said its ugliest car ever; everyone seems to have exactly same thing to say about it. If something isnt round and "flowing" or whatever it can not look good? You all probably drive mondeos and avensises and just echo what others say. I think looks of Gumpert match its performance and if i would become billionaire one day this machine will be high on my shopping list... VERY good looking car.

The Gumpert ISN'T a "no-frills supercar", it's a racing car without a race. It's completely pointless, and is exactly the kind of thing you'd expect a 13 year old car-mad boy to come up with. Hopeless.

Right who insulted the Brera/spyder. i saw one the other day at the traffic lights, well the Syder in thetat darkish red and evn with its roof up it looked fantastic. And yes the Brera is still jsut as good; jusat not if its on a race track then it looks awful with all the body roll affecting the lines, but thta the only time. And this... it isn't about the looks it looks that way for a reason, samne way the Audi R8(the Le man car not the souless sports cra)looks so low and sleek;theeres a reason you know.

Getting a bit fed up with these wealthy ego-maniacs sticking their daft,uncool names on their top end products.Thing looks quite good but then why wouldn't it ,looking like a le-mans racer but i couldn't take it seriously with that name.Same with Mr. Farbouds GTS.For me the name of these type of cars should muster images of catapulting out of town up the M40 into the shires after an expensive night out, with a leggy lovely snuggled up in the passenger seat...instaed i think of carpets and fezzes!.Saw a Range Rover this morning with all original badging removed and KAHN in its place.Despite the big advertising,have only seen one other, probably because HSE SPORT seems to be the hot badge to have on the London commute at the moment.Thank god our late founder of lotus had no ego in this area else we'd have the Chapman elise or god forbid in last months mag a Mk 1 Colin Cortina !!!!!
