Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X GSR FQ-360 (2008) CAR review

By Nick Trott

So here it is: the full loony-tune(d) Evo X. We’ve wondered what this car would feel like since we drove the standard model late last year. The new Evo X is a fine car, but its chassis is almost dismissive of the standard engine’s 291bhp.

The FQ-360 GSR is the top of the range (official) Evo X. The engine is more powerful, the car is loaded with standard kit and there are a few bodywork additions. The FQ-360 is only available in the UK.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X FQ-360... that's a bit of a mouthful!

It is and it points to the fireworks under the bonnet. The Evo’s new die-cast aluminium 4B11 engine was designed to deliver greater torque at lower rpm and more power in standard form than the outgoing 4G63 motor. Combine this with a 12kg weight saving over the old cast-iron version and you’ve got a lower C-of-G and great basic template for some serious tuneability.

HKS goodies (ECU remap, induction kit and new fuel pump assembly) result in a power jump from 291 to 354bhp. Torque is up to 362lb ft from 300lb ft.

Intriguins

i've never been a Mistubishi fan, especially of their diesels (oh my lord the fumes!!) but I have to admit, I'm starting to like the Evo. performance wise it does seem pretty good and one thing I like is that it's a proper sports car for the average joe, the masses. I am not dissing german cars, I own one and I still looove them. I just like the rawness of a japanese performance car every now and then.

Is nothing ever good enough?

Substance or superficial value? What do the readers want? When they look at the German performance segment they comment it is too tame and appeasing to poser mainstream. When they look at Evo X and 360 they comment it is too dear. What for the money will get you to chew the bumper off of a GT3? Want to pose? Go for the 3,500 cheaper car. Want hardcore value? Go for the 360. What are your priorities?
