Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0 (2011) video review


Watch Jethro Bovingdon's video review of the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0. It's a fitting swansong to the current, 997 family of 911s - one final blast before the new 991 arrives at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show.

The RS 4.0 costs £128,466 and Porsche will build just 600 of them (they're already sold out, sadly). That's a lot for a 911, but it is the last we'll see of the 'Metzger' flat six, the legendary motorsport engine that powered many of the finest Porsches of recent years and which won the Le Mans GT1 category in 1998. What a send-off.

If you really want to drive fast, buy a different car

If you want to tailslide in your "ultimate" 911 you need to find that hard to find thing: a bit of road where its safe (in many ways) to do it.   Such bits of road are a fast-disappearing commodity.

 No one drives like this? I do if I can get the appropriate highway, for sure. It's hard to find a stretch of curves and ups and downs that doesn't have a lot of traffic. Fortunately, out her in the wild west of Arizona, these roads aren't that difficult to find. The problem is, they keep "improving" my favorite roads.

I would imagine that a Cayman, with the same type of setup would wipe up the RS though. The mid engine platform is so far superior to the rear hanging 911 that it would hardly be fair I should think. Porsche won't do that though, the 911 is much the cash cow of the company. It will be a slow process, but eventually the Cayman will get there.

@rigidjunkie  I largely agree! 

As a general rule the high traffic density of the UK strongly mitigates against trying to emulate circuit driving on the road.  This business of tail-sliding cross-references to the way the new McLaren is being damned with faint praise by some reviewers.  The big complaint?  You can't turn off the Traction Control, so you can't (easily) play tail-slides as portrayed in this video.

 

These high-spec Porsches are a case in point.   Although I've no doubt some are bought by "proper" enthusisats, I'll warrant the majority are bought by rich kids (and their dads) who have to have the "best" (diamond-encrusted watches, yachts with helipads etc etc.).  Of these 600 end-of-run, absolutely the last, fastest, Porsches I'll warrant only a few will ever be tail-slided (slid?) , and then probably by accident.

 I am officially tired of every magazine video showing the cars sideways at every opportunity.  Nobody drives like this.  Sure you might get a chance to slide a car a few times out on the street but watching these videos makes me feel I should be drifting from the second I leave the garage.  Funny thing is this never bothered my until I bought a car that is capable of drifting.  I expected when I got it that I would be making weekly stops at the tire store and buying wipers for the side windows. In reality there are three turns on my daily commute where it is possible to responsibly slide the car, BUT it is all dependent on traffic lights, other cars and pure luck of things lining up just right.  And even when things do line up and I slide the car for a few seconds a co-worker always happens to be coming in behind me and asks if I am crazy.  

Keep up the good work, but try to find another way of showing us how capable the cars are other than their ability to go sideways at the drop of a hat.
