Actually the first 1.6-litre four-speed GTi went on sale in Germany in 1976 so the German market got its hands on this anniversary model last year. But Brits had to wait until 1977 for the first imports and even they were left hookers – right-hand drive didn’t happen until 1979.
With this limited edition GTi edition 30, the latest in a series of anniversary Golfs we’ve been offered over the years. Just 1500 Edition 30s will be available to UK buyers priced at £22,295 for the three-door, or £22,795 for the five-door we drove. Which makes it £1935 more expensive than the regular GTi.

RE: VW Golf GTi Edition 30 (2006) CAR review
Fabulous car, shame the brakes arent up to the performance. Having owned both the R32 and Edition 30 I really have to say the 30 is the better car. Much smoother, not because of the engine but the mapping is so much better on this car. Its difficult (with a manual at least) to drive the R32 smoothly, its very jerky on off the throttle, you tend to need to slip the clutch a lot to over come this. The Edition 30 may be down a little on BHP (although it doesnt feel like it) but with it having a much lighter lump under the bonnet its so much better balanced, isnt nose heavy. Where the R32 pushes the front wide when high speed cornering the 30 isnt quite so prone to understeer. Across country this car is fast, I didnt lose too much ground when following a friend in a V8 R8. He was shocked at how difficult it was to shake the Golf off. Very underated.

Tried one of these and it does go better than the standard GTI and in my opinion looks far better too. Much nicer wheels and at it looks a bit more special. Shame it doesnt sound any better though and for very little more there is the R32, now that is a proper car!
