Aston Martin DP100 Vision Gran Turismo (2014) unveiled

Published: 27 June 2014 Updated: 26 January 2015

This shock new Aston Martin DP100 Vision Gran Turismo supercar was unveiled today at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed – and gamers will be able to drive the mid-engined V12 in Gran Turismo 6.

DP stands for Design Prototype and this concept car is destined to remain a digital-only experience for now; it joins the other digital prototypes created for the popular computer game’s 15th anniversary.

But it’s the real McCoy – the concept was designed and modelled by Aston Martin’s Gaydon design studio in six months. And design director Marek Reichman claims that this car will influence future Aston Martin road cars.

Aston Martin DP100: the spec

The dramatic looks of the DP100 are no bluff: this car – theoretically – has Aston’s 6.0-litre V12 mounted amidships and it’s breathed on by a pair of turbochargers, swelling power to a heady 800bhp.

Polyphony, the maker of Gran Turismo, is launching an anniversary edition of GT6 with 20 exclusive cars from the likes of Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz.

The Aston Martin DP100 is bound to join other bespoke supercar concepts such as the Nissan Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo and Mercedes-Benz Vision Gran Turismo.

It’s not the first time Aston has built cars for the GT gaming franchise: the DB7 appeared in the very first iteration of Gran Turismo, while the One-77 hypercar is separately available to thrash in the latest GT6 game.

Will future Aston road cars be inspired by DP100?

Seemingly so. Reichman said details such as the ‘blade’ inspired rear lamps would trickle through to production cars. ‘The importance of this project should not be underestimated,’ he said.

‘As with the CC100 Speedster Concept, many of the design cues visible in DP100, such as the light-blade rear lamps, could also feed through into future sports cars that we’ll launch in the offline world.’

Sounds good to us. While we applaud Aston Martin design, it’s true to say that it hasn’t changed much in the past decade. Could the DP100 be the car to spur them forwards into a fresh chapter? Here’s hoping…

Aston Martin DP100: unveiled at Goodwood Festival of Speed

Earlier in the week, Aston Martin unveiled two teaser images showing snapshots of the DP100, suggesting it would be a low-slung, racer-inspired supercar with petrol power mounted amidships.

That warm-up proved accurate, as the DP100 was shown today for the first time at the Michelin-sponsored Supercar Paddock at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed.

PS3 players will be able to download the Aston Martin DP100 from July 2014.

Kazunori Yamauchi, creative genius behind Gran Turismo, said: ‘When I first came face to face with this car at the Aston Martin HQ in Gaydon, I was at a loss for words seeing the level of perfection of its design.

‘While it is clean and classy in design, it is also very emotional. Not only that, but there was this future Aston Martin in front of me that was so detailed, it could be released on the market pretty much as is.’
