This is the new Renault Scenic XMOD. Following the Kaptur compact-crossover, it’s Renault’s latest attempt to jump on partner Nissan’s niche-building bandwagon.
Replacing the regular Scenic MPV in the Renault range, the XMOD adds a dash of utilitarian crossover pretensions to the mumsy Scenic. The seven-seat Grand Scenic will remain, albeit with a facelift cribbed from the Scenic XMOD’s look.
So Renault’s going Qashqai-hunting then?
The jacked-up, five-seat Scenic XMOD certainly looks to be gunning straight for Nissan’s trend-setting crossover. The usual cues of raised ride-height, plastic panelling and chunky bumpers are all present, while the front is reworked with new headlights and grilles for the 2013 Scenic range.
There’s a moderate nod to off-road ability thanks to the car’s ‘Grip Xtend’ traction control. The system, making its first outing for Renault, allows the driver to choose between three traction control settings, including one set up specifically for loose surfaces. It’s front-wheel drive only though, like its home-grown crossover rival: the new Peugeot 2008.
What else is new about the Renault Scenic XMOD?
Inside, Renault has plumbed in its R-link infotainment system, shared with the new Clio. There’s also the option of a flat-bottomed steering wheel, aluminium pedals and a premium Bose stereo inside. the boot is now up to 555 litres in capacity from 522 litres in the old Scenic.
You’ve a choice of three powertrains, including an improved TCe 130 petrol engine with stop/start that drops fuel consumption by 15% versus the old engine.
When does the Renault Scenic XMOD go on sale?
Sales are expected to start in summer 2013, after the XMOD is joined by its facelifted Grand Scenic sister at the Geneva motor show from 5 March 2013. Renault hasn’t divulged price information yet, but Scenic XMODS are expected to start at around £18,500.
