Who is the greatest car designer at work today?

Let's see: Frank Stephenson 'designed' the new Mini and the Nuova 500 the same way Peter Schreyer 'designed' Golf IV and the new Beetle - all are today's takes on a much older design and not originals, very much like a modern re-mix of an ABBA song - thankfully they don't happen that often these days. To his credit, Stephenson was also responsible for the original BMW X5 and the MP4-12C, while Schreyer is slowly moving Kia design from embarrassing towards desirable (still not quite there). In a nutshell, neither can REALLY be described as the greatest at work today. Walter de Silva, while he has overseen some fine works during his career, is at the same time guilty of spoiling previously Bauhaus Audis with grotesque grills and Christmas-tree-lights. So, if considered still at work, there is only one choice: Giorgetto Giugiaro - a man previously awarded the Car Designer of the 20th Century and the only one on this list whose name can be mentioned in the same breath as Niccio Bertone and Sergio Pininfarina. If you look at his portfolio, it's clear he is head and shoulders above everyone else on the list above.

 I'm surprised that we've seen so little of either Vermeersch or Walter d'Silva - they deserve marks for consistency, if not anything else. I'd give D'Silva full preference for the Audi R8 alone

 I voted for Giugiaro, based on his longevity as an influencer on car design.  But I could easily have voted for Ian Callum or Walter de Silva, whom I enormously admire.  But Peter Schreyer?  OK Audi TT v1 (pretty) but every Audi since was just morphed - they're all the same. And now - Kia??  Beginning to be attractive, but ... oh come on!

... I have CDs from a wonderful German singer, Peter Schreier.  Perhaps people thought they were voting for the world's best leider singer.....
