BMW is preparing the antidote to SUV-haters everywhere. Our car spies have snapped hybrid versions of the X6 testing in the USA with a new bonnet that marks out this ‘green’ car. Due in 2009, the BMW shares technology jointly developed with Mercedes, GM and Chrysler.

Right, so this BMW X6 hybrid will be green?

Green-er. While BMW got a jump on the opposition with its Efficient Dynamics technology for its four-cylinder cars, the Munich manufacturer deems it necessary to have hybrid technology in its bigger SUVs and limos.

That means this X6 will come with a two-mode hybrid system that features two electric motors housed in the hybrid transmission. This transmission means the X6 can run on electric power only. It also allows start-stop running in traffic, boosts the engine under acceleration and recovers energy under braking.

I have bought the new X6 35D, and I am getting 30MPG with hardish driving, If I keep to 70 MPH it will return 34MPG but no more. I love the car and will keep this one for two years. The Hybrid must be a diesel IMHO, as petrol Hybrids so far have been flops, the Lexus 400h comes to mind, I tested one for a week with intentions of buying, it turned out a flop and uneconomical.

Indeed Talbot and Top Gear (do I get banned mentioning their name here???) ran a Prius around a test track at full whack while a new M3 yawned pootling it closely behind. The Prius consumer twice the petrol (the Prius is a PETROL car not an electric for thos easily mis-led by the nose of Toyota PR) compared to the under stressed M3. Toyota and Honda do make superb engines but sorry BMW 3.0ltr and 335/535 in petrol or diesel rule the roost. You can follow Govt behaviour change guidelines and drive like funeral directors but I like to get A to B driving sporty (it keeps me awake, alert and safe). Resis, I'm not trying to misquote you. An X6 at 2 Tons is heavy but it's relative to the fact a car is already very, very efficient. Even at 10mpg a 2 Ton car is still more efficient than any public transport system.

Mr revcounter - recently a magazine (might have been this one, might have been a rival) did a parallel test between a BMW 520d and a Prius, travelling across France. The BMW burned less fuel. Its also a bigger, more comfortable car and the better real world driving proposition. Who says Toyota are a decade ahead?

JB - the X6 35d weighs 2185kg! Come on man - compare it to a car, not a bus (I hate those too) - you are cleverly twisting my words and adding you own definitions, but TWO TONNES PLUS! This is a HUGE, HEAVY car, NOT lithe and efficient compared to most traffic! Drive it if you want, but I think it fits the definition of obese right down the middle!
