Internally, the new 911 is known as 991 and Porsche hopes it will continue its ruthless domination of the sports car market.
What can we see?
Porsche is still so shy about anyone seeing the 991 that the drivers of these two test cars appear to execute a swift nine-point turn upon sight of our spies with the video camera. The so-so turning circle gives some idea how it’s going to handle in the Waitrose car park.
The vents on the rear flanks suggest this is the next 911 Turbo. Unfortunately, the cladding (and you do have to wrap up warm in Sweden) disguises the interesting stuff, which is Porsche’s new active aero system.
How different will the new 911 be?
Cosmetically, it’ll be business as usual; the 911 is as much a proven number as a Celine Dion ballad. Even allowing for pedestrian impact legislation and aero tweaks, the classic 911 shape will stay much the same.
There’s more change under the skin, however. The new 911 is expected to make extensive use of exotic materials in order to shed some weight (Porsche says it’s aiming for a 10% reduction) and make the car friendlier on the environment.
