Porsche Cayman (2012): a reader spy video

Hot on the heels of the new-generation Porsche Boxster, Porsche is in the final stages of development on that car's fixed-head sister - the new 2012 Cayman coupe. Click here for our artist's impression of the new Cayman.

The new Cayman looks production ready!

This spy video sent in by CAR reader Toldi showcases the Cayman's familiar coupe profile, though the wheelbase and track have both been extended to give the car a more assertive stance and better roadholding. Detail changes will mirror the rest of Porsche's range: side mirrors migrate from the base of the A-pillar to the tops of the door skins, and all-LED rear light clusters are likely.

While we can see the new-gen 2013 Cayman will be a larger car than its predecessor, it will benefit from Porsche's commitment to weight-saving measures thanks to aluminium construction - the similarly inflated Boxster and 991 are both aroung 40kg lighter than the models they replaced, depending on specification.

Propelling the lighter bodies along will be a two model range of flat-sixes. A 2.7-litre 261bhp unit sees duty in the standard Cayman, while the S sticks with a 3.4-litre, with power bumped up by 5bhp for a 311bhp total.

When will the Cayman teasing eventually end?

You can expect to see the final traces of disguise discarded in late 2012, with right hand drive cars hitting UK showrooms in the first quarter of 2013. Until then, check out more of CAR's extensive Cayman lowdown here.

I like it. I think it is perfect. It looks like the air-cooled 911 from behind, very muscular and with that sexy hourglass porportional shape. So it is lighter, higher body rigidity than the Boxster, more compact and nimble than the 911? More importantly, I hope the new car retains the wonderful driving dynamic of the current Cayman R. Here's hoping.

@desf you are right and CAR is wrong in this article. Read this month's issue with the test of the Boxster. The new Boxster has 311 bhp and the old Cayman S has 320bhp. The new Cayman S will probably get the 326bhp Cayman R version engine.

This is still unbelievable to me, the new Boxster is so good looking and is such a good and pure drive why not give it the full Cayman spec. Oh no wait, Porsche is actually charging more money for a Cayman and by this few bhp advantage they can justifie the price. Which is stupid. The Boxster is al we need, it beats the 911!

261/315hp (or 261/311 in your strange english bhp) are the power outputs of Boxster (and respecitvely no change/5bhp drop compared to current gen cayman). So I'd guess that caymans would get some bump, to like 270-275hp and 325-330hp.
