Vauxhall Junior or Chevy Aveo? A reader mystery

Published: 18 October 2010 Updated: 26 January 2015

CAR reader djrose007 posts this new spy shot of what we thought might be Vauxhall/Opel’s planned new premium city car. Our first glimpse at the proposed 2013 rival to the Fiat 500 and Mini?

Sadly not. Turns out these spy shots are of the new Chevrolet Aveo, not the premium pup codenamed Junior. The intrigue began when an MX-5 driving friend of djrose007 spotted this disguised prototype testing in the Alps.

GM’s small car programme: a reader mystery

‘This photo was taken during a touring holiday in Italy,’ he said. ‘It was having the brakes tested according to the driver. It followed him along the Stelvio Pass, quite a place to test brakes!

‘The chap told me it was going to sit below the Corsa, so I guess it’s a Ka rival,’ he said. ‘It was being tested against a Fiesta and Polo. It had a seriously funky dash/instrument binnacle – but he asked that I didn’t photograph it.’

On Friday we pubilshed Phil McNamara’s news on the new 2013 city car, with which GM Europe plans to take on the Mini and Fiat 500.

However, it turns out this spy shot is of the Chevrolet Aveo, the budget city car due from GM – not the premium one.
