Mini takes to the field for London 2012

Although there’s no motorsport in the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Mini will be making an appearance during the track and field events in the Olympic stadium.

A fleet of three remote-controlled, quarter-scale Mini Cooper JCWs are charged with retrieving javelins, discus, shot and hammer, and will cover around 6000 metres per day while on duty. Each ‘mini Mini’ has a potential payload of 8kg, and will be operated by specially-trained ‘Games Makers’.

It's a nifty sidestepping of the strict commercial rules at the Games, whereby product placement is banned. But as a major sponsor, BMW has somehow managed to persuade the Olympic organisers to allow the baby Mini on the track and field events.

You have to love the Mini MINI, brings some fun and laughter to the games. Good marketing on BMW's part too!

@Batty - Video of the overloaded and very top heavy toys keeling over when they hit a divot will at least provide some entertainment. Better still would be an un-controllable Micro Mini careening into the path of a hurdling event complete with a payload of Javelins. I presume that other “Games Makers” will be on hand to run after the errant Minis and their cargo - someone will be getting some exercise...

@comment8- Because that would be silly. I think the idea is that the athletes are supposed to hit the little Minis with their apparatus of choice isn't it? Otherwise they would surley be using volunteers to retrieve them and promote the healthy, active and participative lifestyle that is the basic theme of the Olympics.

Nifty? Is CAR as BMWs “publishing partner” duty bound to spin a gloss coating on this crass commercialisation? Why not have “little people” dressed up as ¼ scale Ronald McDonald clowns scarpering around the field?

Desperate.  Makes the M1 'story' look relevant.
