Skoda has announced the echoingly roomy new 2015 Superb Estate will cost from £19,840 in the UK when deliveries start in September 2015. And although we’ve yet to see this in the metal, it’s lining up to be the winner of the family car space race judging by its specification.
The Superb range has always impressed with the roominess on offer; chart its history and you’ll remember it was originally created from a cut-n-stretched VW Passat platform for the Chinese market – with acres of rear legroom and a whopping boot as a result.
The estate bodystyle only added to that appeal, making Superbs popular with families and minicab drivers (CAR magazine upset the apple cart by taking the Superb Mk2 out on taxi duties during the official media launch, much to the Czechs’ horror). And there’s more space in every dimension on the new 2015 Super wagon – Skoda is claiming unsurpassed cabin space in the sector.
Skoda Superb Estate Mk3: the lowdown
The latest Superb wagon goes on sale in June 2015 with first right-hand drive UK deliveries expected in September 2015. Priced from £19,840 for a 1.4 TSI petrol S model – around £1200 over the equivalent hatchback. Impressively, that’s only £25 over the outgoing estate.
Engines and trims reflect the new Superb hatchback’s, stretching from that 1.4-litre petrol with cylinder deactivation and rising to the range-topping 2.0 TSI 4×4 DSG with 276bhp and a £35,940 price tag. Buyers can pick from S, SE, SE Business, SE L Executive and Laurin & Klement trim lines.
How big is the Skoda Superb’s boot?
The killer question. The estate’s loadbay stretches to an echoing 660 litres with the seats up, assisted by a l-o-n-g 80mm stretch in wheelbase between the axles. That’s up from the hatchback’s already-impressive 625-litre cargo hold and 27 up from the last Superb Combi. Flop the rear seats down, and that boot capacity jumps to 1950 litres.
There’s little in the way of downsizing here: the new Superb is 23mm longer and 47mm wider than before, now stretching to 4856mm long. But thanks to Volkswagen’s clever-clogs MQB architecture, Skoda claims the kerbweight has in fact shrunk by up to 75kg, depending on spec.
All UK-bound Superbs come with a touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity, alloy wheels (from 16in in diameter), DAB digital radio and – the best bit! – umbrellas in both front doors. A real party piece on damp days.
