One Londoner awoke to the shock of their lives this morning – to find their sensible Vauxhall people carrier had been swallowed by a sinkhole.

The chasm opened up overnight in Woodland Terrace in Greenwich, south-east London, gobbling up the Zafira MPV.

How a Zafira disappeared into the ground

The Zafira belonged to Ghazi Hassan. His brother, Abdul Ahmadzai, who said: ‘He left it here last night after he came round with his wife. I woke up very surprised. The police were here about 4am so I came outside and saw the car – they said it was in a hole.

‘I thought “There’s nothing I can do” and went back to sleep.’

Police cordoned off the sinkhole while authorities determine the cause of the collapse.
