Ford has released a new 2017 version of cult car film short C’Etait un Rendez-vous with the anonymous sports car hero switched for a modern Mustang 5.0 V8 Fastback.

The ‘Stang retraces the route across Paris in early dawn, passing by such landmarks as the Arc de Triomphe before arriving at Sacré Coeur in northern Paris.

It’s rather more sedate than the tyre-shrieking original, whose anonymous driver averaged an estimated 48mph across town in an unauthorised dawn raid.

The 1976 original was filmed by French film maker Claude Lelouch, who cooperated with Ford on the 2017 remake.

‘I had goose bumps watching C’etait un rendez-vous 40 years later in virtual reality,’ he said. ‘At the time, my movie was about the feeling of freedom and the pleasure driving generates. I knew that Ford would do more than just a tribute to the original in this new version.’
