Audi scoop special: Audi's electric car plans

Audi has unofficially said it will sell an electric version of the VW Up (pictured, right) as soon as it becomes available, with the earliest estimate being late 2010. 

But so far, it is not even clear yet whether the group’s new low-cost economy car will be rear- or front-engined; the concept had the engine slung at the back, but the latest news is that production versions will adopt a more conventional layout. An Audi Up…

If the battery version does materialise under the Audi name, it will almost certainly be based on the longest of the three proposed bodystyles. It would offer the most storage space for energy cells.

Will we see an Audi Up! early in the next decade? Our money would suggest it’ll be a while longer…
