Kia’s new Sportage (2010) spied in the snow

Kia is out testing the new Sportage SUV in snowy Sweden ahead of its launch at the 2010 Geneva motor show in March.

The new five-door 4×4 is longer and wider than the outgoing Sportage, with a lower, sleeker roofline. The larger Sorento left CAR tester James Foxall underwhelmed on its debut, so let’s hope the more compact Sportage has a few tricks up its sleeve. The pair certainly look quite similar, even under that disguise.

Design chief Peter Schreyer’s efforts are bearing fruit on new Kias, so expect the new ‘tiger scowl’ face and the latest Kia look to permeate through the Sportage’s new wardrobe.

How will the new Kia Sportage (2010) drive?

When the last Sportage was released in 2005, the ride quality was abysmal. The facelift in 2007 improved things, and the longer wheelbase in the new model should bring a comfier ride.

These new photos suggest additional benefits from that stretch: those big rear doors hint at extra room for rear passengers, and the cargo area has been extended too.

There is still no definitive word on engines in the new Sportage family, but expect the 2.0 diesel from the Hyundai ix35, and a choice of a 2.0 or V6 petrol.
