Mercedes' supercar: more details on the Gullwing

Published: 07 October 2008 Updated: 26 January 2015

CAR’s spy photographers have stolen another glimpse of the gullwing doors in action on the new Mercedes V8 supercar. Our latest scoop picture was taken in America and reveals the roof-hinged door lifted up on its gas strut, as the engineers appear to be packing for a camping holiday.

In a separate batch of spy photos – the Gullwing/SLC is after all the most scooped car in the world at the moment – our man at the Nurburgring has caught the 6.3-litre V8 supercar pounding the ‘Ring as test drivers hone the supercar’s set-up ahead of launch.

Mercedes Gullwing/SLC supercar: the lowdown

The new top-dog Mercedes sports car is expected to cost £120,000 and will be seen in concept guise in 2009, ahead of a 2010 launch. It should be staggeringly quick, weighing in at an aluminium-assisted 1650kg and propelled by a 571bhp/479lb ft AMG-tuned V8.

CAR has already written numerous scoop stories about the Gullwing/SLC, so we won’t repeat all the information here. Suffice to say, the fastest Merc for a generation will have its work cut out in a marketplace that’s rapidly becoming obsessed with CO2 and mpg, not the coupe’s 197mph and 3.8sec 0-62mph time.

Time will tell if Mercedes has misjudged the zeitgeist on this one…
