Help CAR plan its American adventure

Published: 28 August 2008 Updated: 26 January 2015

I need your help. Inspired by CAR’s latest adventures trekking through Morocco, over the Alps and into Russia, I think it’s about time I had a go myself. But while I have a location I also have little else. This is where you, the reader, comes in. I want your thoughts, your opinions and your experiences to help me plan the perfect adventure drive.

What have I got so far? Well, the other half thinks we’re off on holiday to America for two weeks to see the sights. But I’m thinking land in San Francisco (to see the relatives), but then set off in something rear-wheel drive and V8 powered. Heading east I’ve pencilled in Yosemite, Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, before an early morning blat through Death Valley, followed up by an equally quick stop in Las Vegas. Then out to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam, before back to LA and up State Route 1, otherwise known as the Pacific Coastal Highway. I’ve been on Google Maps checking out the road and it looks stunning – try http://maps.google.com, then search ‘42538 CA-1, Big Sur, CA 93920’ and click on ‘street view’. Pretty amazing, right?

So what do you think? What have I missed and what do I need to miss out? And the car – your most powerful rear-drive suggestions please…
