Mercedes GLK unveiled in Beijing

Published: 21 April 2008 Updated: 26 January 2015

Feedback on the forthcoming Mercedes GLK has been mixed to say the least. The final production version at the Beijing motor show is – as predicted – little changed and still ugly, especially in the side profile. However, in ‘on-road’ guise it does have some saving graces…

There are still two versions then?

It seems so. Of the two, the on-road biased white-coloured version is better at hiding the jarring angular side lines and odd door handle scoops. The three-vane grille treatment looks okay and the interior’s brushed aluminium, cream leather and black plastic work well in a minimalist way. Space in the back and front is good.

And this off-road version?

The ‘off-road’ version is just plain odd. The two-vane grille is unconvincing and the heavily lacquered wood smacks of old school taste. Just as well it’s not due for the UK any time soon, although CAR Online has recently reported that the GLK may yet be offered in right-hand drive form by 2010. Order in white on-road spec if at all…
