Ford Mustang – Bullitt

Published: 20 October 2008 Updated: 26 January 2015

Ranking: 2

Year of release: 1968

The car: Ford Mustang 390 GT

Why it’s special: The greatest car chase ever. Period!

Best bit: When Lalo Schifrin’s theme tune starts up you know something special is coming next…

Pub fact: We all know the VW Beetle was passed umpteen times by the Mustang and Charger, but watch the finale of the chase sequence again – can you spot the black Dodge missing the petrol station altogether, even though the place goes up in flames?

Plot overview: An all guts, no glory San Francisco cop becomes determined to find the underworld kingpin that killed the witness in his protection.

For: Listening to that V8 (dubbed in from a GT40) blasting around the streets of San Francisco.

Against: While the Chargers were stock, the Mustang stunt cars had to tweaked to withstand the jumps, and keep up with the bad guys’ Dodge.

CAR verdict: A close second for the greatest Mustang, driven by the coolest film star of all time, in the best car chase ever. The winner must be something special…
