Alfa Romeo’s latest Golf-basher is the Giulietta. Available as a five-door hatch, it’s aimed at those wanting the practicality of the VW Golf and more exciting looks. It’s a great drive and we ran a long-term test of the Giulietta Cloverleaf hot hatch. The Alfa Romeo Giulietta now qualifies for a five-year warranty in the UK.
60sec road test
The Giulietta is best selected in diesel trim. The 1.6 JTDM engine is all you’ll need, although you can pick a more powerful 2.0 JTDM in either 150bhp or 175bhp trim. The petrol engines are cultured and offer low CO2 ratings to trim your tax bills. The Giulietta is based on a standalone front-wheel drive architecture and drives well, if lacking the final polish of the class-leading VW Golf. The ride and handling are sensitive to the spec - lesser models offer a more comfortable drive, in our experience, so stick with smaller wheels and dodge the sports suspension options.
