The A6 comes as a saloon or Avant estate, the latter also available in faux-off-roader guise as the Allroad. It's aimed slap bang in the executive car heartland, and most versions are available with Quattro. For more information on the Audi A6, click on our further stories on the links below.
60sec road test
This is one of the mainstays of the Audi range - a wholesome, sensible exec which does exactly what it says on the tin. It might look like a scaled-up A4, but that's the current Audi way. Some of the best, recently refreshed models are very polished all-rounders - the Ultra model mixes 187bhp 2.0 TDI power with 114g/km CO2 emissions. That's quite impressive for a large 1.8-tonne car. The Avant estates are extremely commodious, and a better bet than the four-door saloon in our view. In summary? It's an A7 without the party clothes, but no less capable on the road. Loads of tech, but little buzz.
The one we'd buy
3.0 TDI. Or if we could afford it, the fab RS6
The one we'd avoid like the plague
A petrol one (don't worry; they don't sell any apart from the RS6!)
Rivals to consider
BMW 5-series, Jaguar XF, Lexus GS, Mercedes E-class
Capable, polished, extraordinarily wide range, lusty diesels
Just oh-so sensible, still can't match RWD rivals for handling finesse
