The A7 is Ingolstadt's answer to the Mercedes CLS - a swooping four-door 'coupaloon'. It's based heavily on the A6 saloon family underneath, so there's the usual wide spread of V6 petrol and diesel power, and a mix of front- or four-wheel Quattro drive. 60sec road test
If you were in any doubt that modern car ranges have fragmented beyond all recognition, consider this model. It's a family-exec spec A6 underneath, but wrapped in a swoopier five-door hatchback bodystyle. And that's where it differs from its Merc rival - it has a liftback rear, not a conventional saloon boot. This gives the A7 real practicality, as befits the Sportback badge. There's oodles of space in the boot (just don't bother with the slow, fussy electric tailgate is our advice) and the passenger compartment is roomy too. The drive is typically Audi-slick, with a wide choice of power outputs from the all-V6 powerplants and the usual advice of avoiding stiffer sports suspension or too-large-rims applies to ensure some degree of executive comfort is retained. Inside the cabin is beautifully finished and - depending on the spec and price point you can afford - offers some stimulating gadgets, including hand-writing recognition for address input for the sat-nav. The best bit? After the initial surprise of a large executive hatchback, when you live with an A7 you realise it's actually just a big, practical luxury fastback. And that's got to be a good thing.
