60sec road test
This is probably our least favourite BMW saloon, but that's not the end of the story. Competing against the all-conquering S-class, not to mention newcomers such as Tesla's extraordinary Model S, life is tough in the limousine market. The Seven is about to be replaced, which excuses some of its foibles. We've never really warmed to its looks, which lack the grace and flow of the 3- and 5-series, but less easy to forgive is a slightly busy ride quality. This sector is all about refinement, after all. There's no doubting the whisper-quiet drivetrain though, its ZF auto 'box slurring gears away seamlessly, the six- and eight-cylinder engines purring away in the background. And Munich also offers an imperious ActiveHybrid option, which has some compelling emissions figures to appease the taxman.
