Formula E tech has made it into a road car… sort of. Schaeffler Group, which has been involved in the all-electric racer series since the start has crammed in powertrain tech from the Formula E cars into the body shell what looks like a mutated Audi RS3 Saloon.

The Schaeffler 4ePerformance is a concept car from the technology brand that uses not one but four electric motors from Formula E world champ Lucas Di Grassi’s 2016/2017 Formula E car.

These four electric motors produce a combined 880kW of shove, or 1184bhp in old money, allowing for a 0-124mph launch in just seven seconds.

A pair of batteries that create 64kWh and ‘selective’ all-wheel drive both feature, too, with the overall design and gearbox developed in-house by Schaeffler and is based on the chassis of ‘a high-volume production vehicle.’

Schaeffler Audi side

‘We are currently testing and developing our own driving dynamics control system, which is based on physical vehicle and wheel modelling,’ said Simon Opel, Schaeffler’s director of special projects. ‘We have been learning a lot especially in the area of software-based driving dynamics control systems.’

The concept goes a little beyond the realms of production for now but is instead seen as a ‘test laboratory on wheels.’
