Jeep has confirmed that its small Renegade and mid-sized Compass SUVs will feature new plug-in powertrains, badged e-volution. The PHEV models have made their debut at the 2019 Geneva motor show.

Crucially, since they are both Jeeps, they still prioritise off-road qualities. The new e-AWD drivetrain means that power driven to the rear wheels is via a dedicated electric motor only. For the Renegade, Jeep claims that total grunt is at least 187bhp but, thanks to the torque from the electric motor, the launch sprint is estimated to be done with in around seven seconds.

In terms of all-electric range, Jeep estimates around 31 miles and the models should pass under the congestion charge with emissions ‘lower than 50g/km.’ Again, for the Renegade, Jeep says the car can do 81mph in all-electric mode.

Other than that, the PHEV models are barely any different from their ICE compadres, save for a dedicated instrument cluster for all of the hybrid graphics and economy information.
