Maserati has proved it’s never too late to change lanes by adding a petrol-powered model to its Levante SUV range in the UK.

When the Levante originally went on sale in the UK in mid-2016 Maserati said it had no plans to offer any engines other than a 3.0-litre V6 diesel. Now it’s added a new Levante S model to the line-up – and it’s not a diesel.

What type of engine is the new petrol option?

A 3.0-litre twin-turbo with 425bhp, built by Maserati’s pals at Ferrari. Claimed performance figures include 0-62mph in 5.2sec and a top speed of 164mph.

Why the change of heart?

Here’s the official line, according to Maserati North Europe region manager Peter Denton:

‘Following the launch of the diesel-powered Levante in the UK, it became clear there is also a demand for the luxury SUV in a petrol-powered version. With the Levante now available in the UK with our V6 petrol engine, we can offer the performance synonymous with Maserati.’

Let’s not forget powerful petrol SUVs can be found in UK brochures from Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar…

When can I buy a Maserati Levante S and how much will it cost me?

Sales start in September 2017, from £70,755.
