Mazda 6: haven’t we seen this before?

Kind of. We’ve previously been teased with a press shot showing just the front of the new, Mondeo-based Mazda 6, but the car was officially unveiled at Frankfurt, revealing a more dramatic design for this next-generation model that’s due to go on sale in the UK from December this year. The 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol and 2.0 turbodiesel engines are carried over from the previous generation, while the old 2.3-litre engine has been upgraded to 2.5-litres. As before, saloon, hatch and estate variants will be offered. Expect a turbocharged MPS model to follow in 2008, as well as a 2.2-litre turbodiesel. Mazda is claiming improved driving dynamics thanks to lessons learnt with the MX-5 and RX8, plus reduced road noise – a weakness of the old model – as the front subframe is now attached to the body at six points rather than the previous four.
