Mazda has confirmed it will display a new sports car concept at the 2015 Tokyo motor show, and has issued a solitary shadow-shrouded preview image.

The accompanying blurb from Mazda describes the car as having a ‘modern look’, but there’s something really rather retro about the smooth surfacing, curved windowline and classic coupe roof treatment on show in the teaser pic, to these eyes.

‘Mazda’s latest creation clearly embodies the carmaker’s lineage,’ is the official line. ‘Designers strove to condense the company’s sports car history to as great a degree as possible into this concept.’ Expect more than a few design hat-tips to classic Mazda sports cars when the lights are switched on, then.

A new rotary age?

It’s no coincidence that Mazda will also be displaying a 1967 Cosmo Sport 110S on its stand – the first mass-produced rotary-engined Mazda. Could the new sports car concept also be rotary powered, like the RX-7 and RX-8 of the recent past? The RX-8 ended production in 2012, and the MX-5’s been missing a big brother sports car to play with since…
